Your guide to enrolment and induction

If you're an on-campus student, you will need to set up your University account, access your student portal (UDo) and start online enrolment before your studies begin.

Follow these steps to start your university journey

As a new student, you will receive an email titled ‘It’s time to set up your university account’ from noreply_passwordcreation@derby.ac.uk. You may need to check your spam filters and junk email.

This email will be sent when you’ve met all the conditions of your course (known as unconditional firm status) and closer to the start of term. It contains instructions for creating your student account.

Please engage with this email as soon as possible. Not doing so may delay enrolment onto your course and access to systems. Setting up your Uni account should take about 10-15 minutes.

If you have previously studied with us or are continuing the same programme, you will not receive this email and can continue to use your previous login details. If you are struggling to log in, you may need to reset your password. For further guidance on this, please see our IT Service Centre Knowledge Base guide on how to manage your password.

UDo is your online portal to the systems and services available to you throughout your studies at the University of Derby. 

Go to udo.derby.ac.uk or download the 'DerbyUni' app from your device’s app store.

After you have created your Uni account, you can sign into UDo with your:

Username: [StudentNumber]@unimail.derby.ac.uk

Password: Usual Uni Password

As you move through the welcome journey to enrolment, induction and becoming a student, UDo will give you easy (tile) access to key services at the right time, such as:

  • Timetable
  • Blackboard Learn - Where you can access your University Induction 
  • Unimail

It's a good idea to take some time to familiarise yourself with the tiles available to you.

You will receive an email titled ‘It's time to start your online enrolment' when it's time to begin enrolling that will advise you on the next steps. 

  • New students.  If you are a new student, this email will be sent to the email address you provided during the admissions process. Please let us know if this email address needs updating by using our enquiry form.
  • Returning students. If you are a returning student, we will send this email to your Unimail address. If you’re completing a placement year, you are not expected on campus for enrolment. However, you are still required to complete this enrolment step.

Follow the instructions in your email on how to begin online enrolment. We recommend you complete this on a PC or laptop, rather than a mobile device. This may not work on a work computer. 

Online enrolment is an important step to update your personal information, review your course details and check your fee and payment status. If you need to update your programme details, or have any difficulty enrolling, you can contact us using our enquiry form.

To begin online enrolment, follow the instructions in your email. The first step is accepting the terms and conditions. This link will open a new page, so you may need to allow pop-ups to enable this. Once opened, please read the terms and conditions before closing the page. You can then return to accept the terms and conditions. Now, continue to proceed through each page as guided until the process is complete. 

Term Time Address

As part of online enrolment, you'll be asked to check and input your personal details. We'll ask you for your term-time address, this is the address you will be living at during term time, i.e your Uni accommodation or halls. If you're not yet sure where you will be living during term time, enter the address you are currently staying at. We cannot confirm your enrolment without a term-time address in the UK, so please provide one during online enrolment. If you need to change this or edit it after online enrolment, you can do this on UDo by selecting the Student Record Tile. 

Module selection

You will be automatically enrolled on your mandatory modules. These can be viewed on the enrolment summary page at the end of online enrolment.

Module selection should be discussed with an appropriate academic each year to make the right choice for your study. 

  • New students, if applicable, an opportunity to discuss module selection will be included within your programme induction.
  • Returning students, if you have an active refer or defer against a module from a previous academic year, you don’t need to re-enrol on that module(s).

If you cannot see the module you need on the module selection page, please complete online enrolment and then contact us using the enquiry form.

If you are unsure about your module choices, please contact the StudentHub@Derby or programme leader for guidance.

Your induction process is in two parts: University Induction and programme (course) induction. These can be accessed through the ‘Blackboard Learn’ tile on UDo. This will become visible to you as you progress through enrolment; please allow up to 48 hrs after you enrol online for this tile to appear.

University Induction

The University Induction is accessed through Blackboard and provides useful information on what to expect at the University as well as guidance to support you in making the most of your time studying with us.  

You can work through the University Induction material in your own time. Explore the sections, taking note of what you need and what you believe to be most helpful to you. 

How do I find it?

The University Induction is located in Blackboard, which can be accessed via the 'Blackboard Learn' tile in UDo: 

  • In Blackboard, click on ‘Modules’ in the left-hand menu 
  • Click on 'University Induction'. 

Programme (course) Induction

Your programme induction is different to the University Induction and introduces the programme and what can be expected, alongside all the important people you will be working with: academics; staff in your College, School and Department; and students who will study and live alongside you. It is a key opportunity to start making connections with other students. 

Your programme induction will include a range of online and on-campus activities to help you settle in and feel at home.

As part of the Welcome journey, it is very important for you to attend your programme induction.

How do I find it?

Once available, the Programme Induction information and schedule will be located in Blackboard, which can be accessed via the 'Blackboard Learn' tile on UDo: 

  • In Blackboard, click on ‘Programmes and Organisations’ (if you're using the app click on the 'More' tab at the bottom and then ‘Organisation’)
  • Click on the name of your course
  • Select 'Programme Information’
  • Click on ‘Programme Induction Schedule’. 

Here you will find your induction information, your programme induction schedule and any specific learning materials. This will provide you with guidance to help you through your first few weeks with us.

We will continue to update the programme induction area as the full programme of sessions, events and activities is confirmed, so keep an eye out for future developments.

Visit the Enrolment Hub for your right to study check

The Enrolment Hub at Kedleston Road Campus will be open for enrolment support. The Enrolment Hub is located at our Library. Please see our opening times and locations:

  • Monday 1 September to Friday 26 September 2025: 
    • Monday to Thursday: 10:30am - 5:00pm
    • Friday: 10:30am - 4:30pm

To help ensure you have plenty of time to complete all steps of Enrolment comfortably, we recommend arriving 30 minutes before the final closing time.

After Friday 26 September, you can visit your Student Hub for enrolment support.

What is a Right to Study Check?

If you are not a British or Irish passport holder, then you will be required to have a student visa or another UK immigration permission in order to study in the UK with our University. You could have a Student Visa, Pre-Settled or Settled status under EUSS, a Skilled Worker visa, a Family Permit or any other immigration status that allows you to study in the UK.

Regardless of your fee status (Overseas, Home or EU), if you declare to have a single or dual nationality from outside the UK, you will need to show the relevant original documents linked with your immigration status when you visit campus for your Right to Study checks before your enrolment can be confirmed. Please note, if you have dual nationality where one of the nationalities is Irish or British, you may also need to complete a Right to Study check.

Please view the below information on whether a payment is required before your enrolment can be confirmed.

Please note, the payment amount required for enrolment may not be reflected on your upcoming payment calendar and due dates. Your payment calendar may not indicate a payment is due during enrolment, but depending on your course level, residency and funding arrangements, a payment might be an enrolment requirement.

If you are self-funding

  • If you are a self-funding full-time Undergraduate home student, you do not need to make a payment before enrolling
  • If you are a self-funding part-time Undergraduate home student, you will need to pay 25% of any Autumn and/or Through modules before your enrolment can be confirmed
  • If you are a self-funding Postgraduate Taught home student, you will need to pay 25% of any Autumn and/or Through modules before your enrolment can be confirmed
  • If you are a new international or EU Undergraduate or Postgraduate Taught student, you will need to make an advance payment of £8000 before your enrolment can be confirmed
  • If you are a returning international or EU Undergraduate or Postgraduate Taught student that started with us in 2023 or earlier, you will need to make a payment of £3000 before your enrolment can be confirmed
  • If you are a returning international or EU Undergraduate or Postgraduate Taught student that started with us in 2024, you will need to make a payment of £8000 before your enrolment can be confirmed
  • If you are a self-funding Postgraduate Research student, you will need to make an advance payment before enrolment can be confirmed, students must pay between 25% and 100% of the fees at the first enrolment, depending on when they join the University. If you are being sponsored by your employer or another organisation

If you are being sponsored by an organisation or employer, evidence needs to be submitted to sponsors@derby.ac.uk in advance of enrolment. Your enrolment cannot be confirmed prior to you providing a sponsor letter from the template shown, so please ensure your sponsor provides this.

If you are being funded by Student Finance

If you are being funded by Student Finance, you do not need to make a payment at enrolment. However, if you are enrolling for the first time, please ensure you provide your Student Support Number (SSN) during online enrolment or a Notification of Entitlement Letter from Student Finance in advance of enrolment. If you are not able to provide this, you may need to make a payment as a self-funding student before enrolment can be confirmed.

Further details about making a payment

You can check when your fees are due and how much they are through the 'Money' tile on UDo - Select 'Make a payment or set up a recurring card payment' and then log into 'Student Account Summary'. From there, you can make a payment online or set up a recurring payment.

Once your enrolment is confirmed, this officially registers you as a student at the University of Derby. 

Visit the Enrolment Hub for support

We may confirm your enrolment remotely, however, you can visit our Enrolment Hub at any point for support or to complete your enrolment.

The Student Hub and Enrolment Hub at Kedleston Road Campus will be open for enrolment support. The Enrolment Hub is located at our Library. Please see our opening times and locations:

  • Monday 1 September to Friday 26 September 2025:
    • Monday to Thursday: 10:30am - 5:00pm
    • Friday: 10:30am - 4:30pm
  • You can also visit us during Welcome Weekend:
    • Friday 12th September: 10:30am - 7:00pm
    • Saturday 13th September: 11:00am - 5:00pm
    • Sunday 14th September: 1:00pm - 5:00pm

Accessible Enrolment Available

If you feel you would benefit from enrolling at a quieter time or at your own pace, we’re here to help. Please get in touch with us via the enquiry form so we can make suitable arrangements for you.

New students 

Once you have enrolled online, made any relevant payment and completed the University Induction module online, your enrolment may be confirmed remotely. In addition to the above, you will need to do the following before your enrolment can be confirmed:

  • Right to Study Checks: If you have a Student Visa or declare a nationality from outside the UK, you will need to show the relevant original documents when you visit campus for your Right to Study checks before your enrolment can be confirmed. To check if this is required, or which documents you will need to bring, find out more about the Right to Study checks.
  • UK Term Time Address: We cannot confirm your enrolment without a UK term-time address, so please provide one during online enrolment. If you need to change this or edit it after online enrolment, you can do this on UDo by selecting the Student Record Tile.

Once your enrolment is confirmed, this officially registers you as a student at the University of Derby. You'll receive an email confirmation within 24 hours of being registered to your personal email address. If you have applied for Student Finance, it can then take up to five working days for that payment to reach you, but no earlier than the first day of term. Your personalised timetable will then be visible on UDo 2 working days after your confirmation. 

You can also visit the Enrolment Hub for support on campus during the Welcome period, should you require any support with your online enrolment, making a payment, the Right to Study checks and to have your enrolment confirmed in person. 

Returning students

Once you have enrolled online, made any relevant payment and completed the University Induction module online, your enrolment may be confirmed remotely. In addition to the above, you will need to do the following before your enrolment can be confirmed:

  • Right to Study Checks: If you have a Student Visa or declare a nationality from outside the UK, you'll be asked to confirm your visa and documents during Online Enrolment. If nothing has changed, your Right to Study check and enrolment will be completed remotely. You can still visit the Enrolment Hub if needed. Visit our guidance to find out more about the Right to Study checks.
  • UK Term Time Address: We cannot confirm your enrolment without a UK term-time address, so please provide one during online enrolment. If you need to change this or edit it after online enrolment, you can do this on UDo by selecting the Student Record Tile. 

This officially registers you as a student at the University of Derby for the year, you'll receive an email confirmation within 24 hours of being registered to your personal email address. If you have applied for Student Finance, it can then take up to five working days for that payment to reach you, but no earlier than the first day of term. Your personalised timetable will then be visible on UDo 2 working days after your confirmation. 

You can also visit the Enrolment Hub for support on campus during the Welcome period, should you require any support with your online enrolment, making a payment, the Right to Study checks and to have your enrolment confirmed in person.

Visit the Enrolment Hub to collect your Unicard (student ID Card).

The Student Hub and Enrolment Hub at Kedleston Road Campus will be open for enrolment support and to collect your Unicard. The Enrolment Hub is located at our Library. Please see our opening times and locations:

The final Enrolment step, collecting your Unicard: As a new student, once you have registered, you will need to collect your Unicard. Your Unicard is used to access our buildings, to record your attendance and is your gateway to Student discounts!

Bring a form of ID: Please note that all students are required to bring a form of photo ID at the point of collecting your Unicard. This is a separate process and not part of any other onboarding or Right to Study checks. Failure to do so will cause delays in receiving your Unicard and will delay your final enrolment step.

Upload your photo in advance: To avoid delays, please follow the guidance on UDO to upload an appropriate passport-style photo for your Unicard.

Accepted forms of ID:

  • Current signed passport
  • Current UK or EEA photocard driving license 
  • Provisional UK photocard driving license
  • National identity card bearing a photograph of the applicant 
  • Residence permit issued by the Home Office to EEA nationals on sight of our own country passport 
  • Photogenic registration cards for the self-employed individuals in the construction industry- CIS4
  • A birth certificate is acceptable, providing a proof of address is provided as well

Unfortunately, we cannot accept: 

  • Mobile phone bills 
  • Credit card statements
