Sam's story video transcript

On my first day, I was really a bag of emotions. I was feeling nervous, I was feeling excited, I was feeling scared, I was feeling happy. I was just all over the place, it was an emotional rollercoaster.

What I'm most proud of is the fact that I was able to move from my home country of Zimbabwe to England to study and to try to carve my own path in life. It was the first step of becoming an independent adult, which was a big step for me, having grown up a shy person person, it was quite an achievement.

How I feel about Derby as a city itself is that it's definitely cold. But I feel like it's the place where as an international student, it's not too big or too small that you get overwhelmed. The locals are very friendly and everything is in close walking distance so I feel like this is a perfect fit me.

I picked the University of Derby because it allowed me to study a Joint Honours programme, combining two of my favourite subjects - Geology and Business Management - and merging them into one degree.

In terms of me as a person, I believe that I've learned that you never really know how good you are at something until you try it. And there have been various people along the way in my University of Derby journey who have been able to support me and to push me through the obstacles that I've faced.
