Take our foundation year route for the ideal introduction to a career working with children and young people. It provides a smooth transition to our highly regarded degree, which boasts impressive employability and student satisfaction rates.

If you don’t have the formal qualifications you need to enter our BA (Hons) Child and Youth Studies directly, you can start your studies on our foundation year. It gives you a firm grounding of skills and knowledge, plus a vital introduction to the subject, so that you can achieve your full honours degree in four years.

Our BA (Hons) Child and Youth Studies with Foundation Year equips you with the practical, intellectual and leadership skills for a career where you can have a positive impact on children and young people at the most important stages of their lives.

With its strong emphasis on real-world learning, the course paves the way for you to work with 0-19-year-olds in a variety of professional roles offering immense personal satisfaction.   

Following your broad-based foundation year, you’ll be introduced in stage one of the course to the range of knowledge, values and skills you’ll need on placement and as you progress your studies. We explore the theory that underpins practice in education and care for children and young people.

In stage two, you’ll extend this knowledge by looking at current policy and inter-agency working and by developing your skills in research and reflective practice.

Stage three allows you to specialise in areas which capture your own professional interests, including an in-depth independent study. Insights gained through these in-depth studies will help you take on the wider responsibilities in your field of practice.

This course opens doors to postgraduate study too. Although it does not offer Qualified Teacher Status, many of our graduates choose to apply for places on teacher training courses, such as our PGCE Primary or PGCE Post-14.

Inspiring work placements

This highly practical degree draws on our longstanding partnerships with employers across the sector. Throughout your studies, you’ll spend at least 164 days on work placements which we will organise with you. This will give you solid experience of what it is like to work in early years, primary, secondary and tertiary education settings as well as with young people in alternative educational provision.

In stages one and two of the course, your placements will entail working with children and young people across the 0-19 age range. This helps you make more informed choices about where your professional interests and ambitions lie. In stage three, you can select a placement which allows you toconcentrate on your chosen field and tailor your work-based practice to your career aspirations.

From stage one onwards, we can offer placement experiences in a variety of settings such as children's centres, multi-agency support teams, primary and secondary schools, pupil referral units, nurture units, outdoor education, alternative education and FE colleges.

If you are a part-time student already in appropriate paid employment, it is possible for you to use your own workplace as a placement setting.

You will have the chance to consider education from different international and cultural perspectives, including the opportunity to travel abroad to see how other countries approach child and youth studies.

In previous years our students have been to Amsterdam and Budapest – experiences which have broadened their horizons and built their confidence.

Foundation Year - helping you to achieve more

Including a foundation year as part of your four-year study programme will give you a head start in your academic and professional life. The foundation year offers the chance to strengthen your skills, knowledge and confidence – with extensive support from our expert staff – before you advance to stage one of your honours degree. It could also be beneficial if you are planning a career change and want to get to grips with aspects of subjects which are new to you.

Our degrees with a foundation year are continuous, meaning that you won’t need to apply again once you have successfully completed the first year.

This module will present learners with opportunities to demonstrate understanding of literary texts of different types and periods and to recognise their importance and relevance as social commentaries of the day. This module will provide students with a theoretical understanding of physiology and anatomy of the relevant body systems. Fundamental anatomical and physiological concepts will be explored for a range of body systems in relation to what these systems consist of and how they function. This core module is intended to develop students’ knowledge of theoretical and practical perspectives on managing the behaviour of learners (0-19).

Students will develop an appreciation of an array of biological and environmental influences on children’s and young people’s behaviour, evaluating the relationship between these influences and the behaviours exhibited.

Independent Study

The focus of this module is an independent study (dissertation) which will be referred to as a primary research-based project (PRBP). This will be developed from the student’s individual interests within the 0-19 sector.

The module offers opportunities for student choice and autonomy in the selection of an area of study so that a personal, professional or work-based interest is pursued. The primary research-based project will enable students to investigate in greater depth a key issue which relates to their current knowledge of the 0-19 sector and professional practices associated with their work setting/placement. Through a critical comparison of alternative research methodologies, research methods and the presentation of valid/reliable primary and secondary research findings, this module will further develop students’ skills in research and inform their work-based/placement provision.

In this option module students will develop a broad knowledge and understanding of creativity as a concept, a process and a product for children’s and young people’s learning, development and well being within an educational context.

How you will learn

You’ll learn through lectures, seminars, and work-based activities. You’ll also have placements in either early years, primary, secondary, or tertiary education. This will give you the opportunity to apply the theory to your practical experiences. Throughout your time with us, you’ll receive plenty of support from our team.

How you're assessed

During your foundation year you will be assessed mainly by coursework, and with some in-class tests.

From stage one onwards there are no exams, so you’ll be assessed through a range of reflective tasks, creative presentations, essays, portfolios, and reports.

Because it includes a foundation year, it provides a smooth transition for people who might have previously felt unable to realise their career ambitions through a lack of traditional qualifications.

Our BA (Hons) Child and Youth Studies could be your springboard to roles in social work, family intervention, behavioural inclusion, mentoring, supporting students with SEN and providing pastoral care for students in educational settings.  Our graduates are now pursuing worthwhile careers as teaching assistants, inclusion officers, nursery managers and learning support practitioners.

Our staff are dedicated to improving your career prospects at every stage of the course. The additional qualifications you can gain – in skills such as first aid, Makaton and safeguarding – make your CV stand out further still.

Please note that this course does not lead to Qualified Teacher Status. However, if you would like to train to be a teacher, you can apply to study our PGCE Primary or PGCE Post-14 (Education and Training).

Additional information about your studies

Teaching hours

Like most universities, we operate extended teaching hours at the University of Derby, so contact time with your lecturers and tutors could be anytime between 9am and 9pm. Your timetable will usually be available on the website 24 hours after enrolment on to your course.
