Richard's story video transcript

My family have never really been interested in school or education, in that they've only really been like 'You've got to get a job, you've got to get a trade', that kind of thing. I guess me going to university is kind of a big achievement, firstly for me, but also a proud moment for them.

Before I came to uni I thought I was going to be an art teacher. After coming here and being able to travel, I realised that I can teach art at any point in my life but this is the time to travel. I think coming to Derby has really made me focus on these opportunities, where I can go abroad to work or study.

The way the studios work here is completely different to the way the studios work in Germany and so obviously I've already had a year studying here and I kind of got to know uni life in England and then suddenly I was in a completely new city, and a completely new location. It was an amazing experience and I think that's something really kind of amazing that you can do here - study abroad and experience different cultures.

It's making me want to push myself more, it's showing me that there's so many opportunities everywhere, that you just have to look for them, so I think that's really important.
