Placements and traineeships overseas

Students can choose to undertake a one-year placement overseas. This can be a fantastic way to boost not only your skills and experience but your cultural capital as well.

Year-long placements should be full-time and closely related to your degree subject to maximise the relevance of your learning. They must have your Programme Leader’s approval.

Current University of Derby students can find out more about the overseas placements process on UniHub.

Where you can go

Students have previously been to countries including:

Financial information

You may be able to apply for Turing Scheme Grant funding, however this funding is limited and specific and so should not be relied upon as the sole source of financial support during an international placement. Find out more on our Global Opportunities site.

Learn more about the Turing Scheme on the Gov.uk website.

Support for finding accommodation and visa applications

You will receive support, but it is your responsibility to secure a placement and related accommodation. Your Study Abroad Advisor is able to provide support via group meetings or one-to-one sessions.

We also provide a Global Opportunities workbook for you to work through the practicalities of living and working abroad.

How to apply

You can apply at any time in your first year, but the earlier the better, as it is first come first served. Find out more on our Careers and Employability webpages.

Send an e-mail to goplaces@derby.ac.uk to discuss placements overseas.
