The Summer School Programme 2020 has, unfortunately, been cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. If you have already signed up to this, our Student Wellbeing team will be in touch as soon as we know further details. The Summer School for students with Autism and Asperger Syndrome provides new students with the opportunity to become familiar with the University during a quieter period and begin to prepare for successfully managing their transition to university.

This Summer School is a free event and is open to any student with Autistic Spectrum Disorder who has applied to the University of Derby.

You can arrive at student halls from 10:00am and should aim to be there by 10.30am to give you time to go to your room and leave luggage. We will begin by welcoming the group and giving an overview of the event at 11:00am in the common room.

Make your way to the student halls and we will meet you in the common room. There will be someone there to welcome and direct you. You will be given a key and will be able to take your luggage to your room. The group will then meet back in the common room to begin the day’s sessions.

Yes, an information pack will be sent out prior to the event, this will have details of the programme and other useful information about the University and what to expect during the event.

Not at all, you will be invited to participate in the whole programme but if you need to sit out of an activity or take a break this is absolutely fine. We will have staff and student mentors there at all times who can take you to a quiet space and offer support as needed. There are regular breaks built into the programme to allow time to get refreshments and take some time out.

You will need to bring clothes and toiletries suitable for the 3 days. Meals will be provided. You are welcome to bring additional food items for breakfast.

Specific dietary needs will be catered for if details are provided on the application form or at least 3 weeks prior to the event by emailing wellbeingcentre@derby.ac.uk.

There is parking available at the student halls. You will need to provide us with the make, model and registration number of your vehicle on the application form or at least 3 weeks prior to the event, you can give us these details by emailing wellbeingcentre@derby.ac.uk. Please inform us of this prior to the event so we can make suitable arrangements for parking. 

You should not need to drive anywhere during the event.

For breakfast there will be cereal, milk, bread, butter and jam to eat, and tea, coffee and squash to drink.

There will be food vouchers provided during the daytime events to buy food individually from the Union of Students shop, who sell a wide variety of sandwiches, snacks and salads. A buffet lunch will be provided on Day 3.

An evening meal will be provided on Day 1. A cookery session will be facilitated on Day 2 where you will prepare your own evening meal with the help of staff supporting the event. All ingredients will be provided.

The group will meet at 9:15am at the start of both days ready to start sessions at 09.30am - the sessions finish at 4:00pm.
