About

I am a researcher at the University of Derby Institute for Innovation in Sustainable Engineering. I work on a wide range of projects with SMEs from the Derbyshire region to help reduce the carbon emissions of their products and processes.

I'm interested in renewable energy and low carbon design. I am a chartered Mechanical Engineer and have a PhD in Tidal Turbine hydrodynamics from The University of Sheffield, and experience working in commercial building design as a consultant.

Teaching responsibilities

I am not currently involved in any teaching, but I am a STEM Ambassador and work with schools to promote STEM education and careers.

Research interests

My research interests are centred around renewable energy and low carbon technologies. I have experience in solar, wind, ground and air source, wave and tidal energy, and in energy efficiency measurement and improvement.

I also have experience in computational modelling, particularly Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Finite Element (FE). I enjoy writing code in Python and using MATLAB for data analysis.

I am also interested in Life Cycle Analysis, structural dynamics including modal analysis, and acoustics.

Qualifications

Recent conferences

I have presented work at conferences in the UK, France, Italy, and Japan.

In 2019 I will be presenting at the European Wave and Tidal Energy conference in Naples.

Experience in industry

I spent three years working for AECOM, a global building design consultancy company. I was part of a small specialist team within the AECOM Buildings Division.

International experience

Since 2013 I have worked in collaboration with the "LABIMA" laboratory at the University of Florence, Italy. This work was initially funded by the MARINET programme (EU FP7), then supported by EPSRC, and laterly by the MARINET2 programme.

I have also worked in France as a chalet host.

In the media

I appeared on the Ian Skye radio programme on BBC Radio Derby in September 2018, and discussed the potential for solar and power in the UK and the Derbyshire region.

I have also spoken to other local and national radio stations and newspapers on behalf of my charity.
