About

As a Lecturer on the BA (Hons) Professional Policing course I have responsibility for teaching and tutorial guidance, research and other forms of scholarly activity, examining and assisting with curriculum development, administration and related activities.

Teaching responsibilities

I teach on all policing-related modules within the Professional Policing degree. This includes all aspects of criminal and road traffic law and procedure, including practical application of policing powers and processes, investigative interviewing and custody procedures.

I also contribute to the teaching and development of police cadets as part of the University Foundation in Policing programme.

Additionally, I assist in the supervision of Masters level dissertations on policing-based topics.

Professional interests

I am interested in all aspects of criminal investigation and detection processes, particularly in digital developments and in the issues raised through research-driven policing. I have a strong interest in initial and ongoing police training and development.

Research interests

I am particularly interested in sociological and political influences upon policing practice.

Qualifications

Experience in industry

I have 33 years' service as a police officer, retiring in April 2016. Within that service I have over a decade of experience as a police trainer, in all aspects of crime, general police duties, traffic law and first aid. I was a class 1 advanced driver and qualified to the rank of Sgt in 1999. As an experienced IPLDP trainer I also spent some time as the SPOC for the PTRLDP programme for Derbyshire Constabulary (the process by which individuals qualified as police trainers).

Additional interests and activities

I play the piano and have taught this for many years. I have a YouTube channel containing a large number of videos of my piano playing and have 4,600 subscribers to my channel.
