Andy has over 25 years of experience working in Higher Education and five years of experience working in the NHS as a health promotion specialist. Andy is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Public Health and a NICE Guidelines Implementation Expert. He was involved in the 2019 Chief Medical Officers' Physical Activity Guidelines. He is a member of the UK Expert Committee for Communications that informs the four UK CMOs on communication priorities for physical activity. He also worked on the NICE Guidelines for Exercise Referral. He was appointed as an 'expert' in physical activity and older people. He is trained in Intervention Mapping techniques in public health from the University of Maastricht.

He has led a number of national evaluations of multi-site physical activity programmes including those for the Premier League, Department of Health and Sport England. Andy has an interest in the impact and implementation of PA interventions including the role of healthcare professionals in promoting physical activity, the CMO guidelines and the role of football club community trusts and health improvement.

He has published over 70 peer-review articles and book chapters including several in international handbooks. Andy has a number of PhD completions.  Currently he supervises several PhD students at a number of institutions on topics such as physical activity and dementia, the role of healthcare professionals and physical activity promotion and physical activity and underserved groups.

Experience in industry

Andy was a Health Promotion Specialist working in the NHS in the North East of England between 1992-1996. He had a responsibility for physical activity promotion, NHS and Community Settings. He has experience of planning, implementing and evaluating interventions, needs analysis and partnership working.  Andy is also a Trustee at Notts County FC Football in the Community Trust with responsibility for Research, Impact and Evaluation. 

International experience

Andy has studied Intervention Mapping in Public Health and Project Management in the Netherlands and presented research at a number of international meetings.
