Paul Shields

Senior Lecturer (Applied Acoustics) College of Science and Engineering

About

My role as Senior Lecturer predominately working in Environmental Acoustics.  This is not only about  the technicalities of measuring, predicting and controlling noise (and vibration) but how we assess the effects on people and ecology. Environmental acoustics is linked closely with planning, reducing harmful noise, and sustainability through creating healthier living  and working environments.

Before joining UoD I spent over 35 years working in acoustic consultancy and research and I bring a comprehensive knowledge of who are the relevant experts across different fields in the acoustics industry.

I have I have authored, co-authored, and presented a number of papers and have provided training in acoustics to a range of organisations and lecturers on acoustics at several universities.

Teaching responsibilities

Professional interests

My research background includes 11 years with British Rail Research, as well as directing AECOM's research into acoustics, including the Defra Noise and Nuisance, and Research, Development & Evidence framework contracts. I have combined the skills of multidisciplinary teams of consultants and academics on projects including research for Defra into the economic value of quiet areas and developing a methodology to value the impacts of noise related sleep disturbance on productivity.

Qualifications

Experience in industry

Before joining the university, I led the AECOM Acoustics team of over 50 staff providing consultancy services on a broad range of topics associated with sound and vibration. These include environmental noise impact assessments, particularly in respect of rail, road, complex infrastructure developments, building acoustics, noise and vibration mitigation design, long term noise and vibration monitoring, and acoustics related research.

Prior to working for AECOM  I worked for 17 years in the rail industry. This included working at British Rail Research, initially working in tribology followed by 11 years in all aspects of railway related noise and vibration focussing on wheel/rail noise control and rail vehicle acoustics. This was followed by several years as an independent consultant working for two train manufacturers and for London Underground. I  worked with Alstom on all aspects of the design and manufacture relating to the acoustic performance of the 140mph Class 390 Pendolino train. During a two-year contract with London Underground's N+V team I was responsible for assessing and finding engineering solutions to N+V complaints from residents living close to railway lines
