About

As a technical advisor for the Fashion Programmes, my role is generally varied and challenging, as I have to assist in the 3-dimensional development of garments with our Fashion students, daily assisting them with the development, construction, and production of their creations.

An important part of my role are instructor sessions, showing students specific garment construction methods, from small details to full garment. Including the creation of resources to help with academic teaching activities, including online videos from the basics of ‘how to thread the specialist lockstitch and overlock machine’, to more complex step-by-step instruction into ‘Tailored Jacket’, cutting and construction techniques. These are also supported by visual instruction books.

Health and safety, the preparation, maintenance of our Specialist Fashion Industrial machinery housed within our fashion studios is also integral to my day to day role.

Experience in industry

I have 20 years experience in the textile industry, involving garment design, pattern cutting and garment technology. I have worked mainly for M&S suppliers, including the role of head designer at Burnham Manufacturing Ltd. Nottingham, where I designed ladies' blouses and lingerie.

The above industry experience has enabled me to fully use the skills gained, and successfully pass on to the Fashion students I now work with at the University of Derby.

I joined the University of Derby in 2010 as a technical advisor in the fashion department.
