With degrees in psychology, natural science, engineering and ergonomics (among others), I have worked across a range of sectors, including offshore oil and gas, aviation, and for the last 17 years, healthcare. Whilst my roles have been mainly either consulting or research, I am hugely enjoying this lecturing opportunity to support my students to develop their knowledge and skills in human factors/ergonomics.

Teaching responsibilities

I teach on the MSc in Ergonomics and Human Factors (across all pathways).

Professional interests

My professional interests are usually linking Human Factors/Ergonomics with Occupational Safety and Health - and I have been working on projects overlapping these disciplines for over 20 years. I particularly enjoy advancing these into new and complex areas - for example, sustainable development and the rural industries, space systems, and media/live events/broadcasting. I’m also passionate about applying human factors methods to advance inclusivity and have carried out research applying human factors methods to challenge the factors influencing the lack of diversity in the film-industry.

Research interests

For 17 years, I have been involved in research in applying the methods from safety and risk management from industry to healthcare, with particular interest in human error and human reliability. I have been involved in further initiatives to professionalise risk management in healthcare, supporting to align the work in patient safety with the requirements of health and safety legislation.

I was one of the first people to apply human reliability methods to the issues of sustainable development and I’m excited to have the opportunity at the University of Derby to link with the established group working in nature connectedness.
