About

I currently work as a Lecturer in Children's Nursing at the University of Derby.

I am a Registered Midwife with experience in maternal, neonatal, and family-centred care, contributing to undergraduate children’s nursing education.

My academic journey began 25 years ago in Slovakia, where I first taught German for two years while studying for a Higher Education Teaching degree in specialist subjects. Afterwards, I spent a year in Germany and had planned to stay in the United Kingdom for two years. However, life took an unexpected turn, and I have made the UK my home ever since.

Before pursuing midwifery, I gained experience across various care sectors, caring for people from infancy through older age. I later qualified as a midwife with a First-Class Honours degree and have since gained 13 years of clinical experience in hospital settings, primarily on the labour ward and enhanced care unit. I am particularly passionate about intrapartum care for women with additional needs.

Eighteen months ago, I returned to academia at the University of Derby, where I support students on both the BSc and MSc Midwifery programmes. I also serve as Link Lecturer for King’s Mill Hospital and Northampton General Hospital.

Teaching responsibilities

Professional interests

In my current role as a Clinical Educator and Lecturer, I focus on enhancing students’ learning experiences to develop them into competent and compassionate midwives. My goal is to empower the next generation of midwives, promote positive attitudes within the profession, and contribute to the renewal and advancement of midwifery practice.

Research interests

I aim to research collaboration between practice and education, promoting inclusivity and reducing negative interactions such as hierarchical harassment and bullying.

Qualifications

International experience

I spent my childhood and early adulthood in Slovakia before living in Germany for a year to further develop my German language skills. I have now lived in the UK for over 24 years, during which I have embraced and learned from cultural differences. I incorporate these cultural insights into our curriculum on cultural sensitivity and the provision of culturally appropriate care.

Additional interests and activities

Outside of work, and when not spending time with my children, I enjoy reading and knitting. I also maintain an active lifestyle through regular gym sessions, swimming, and walking in nature.
