I am a Senior Lecturer in the School of Nursing and Professional Practice. I have many years of experience in Healthcare Education and have gained a wide variety of experience across different universities and programmes.

Teaching responsibilities

I am module leader for the Teamworking; Leadership and Management module on the BSc(Hons) Nursing programme and work with students studying on the adult and mental health routes to develop their skills to effectively work as part of and lead a team when they qualify.

My other teaching interests are - applied health sciences (particularly cardiac nursing); politics and healthcare; and professional development.

Professional interests

I qualified as a nurse from one of the first nursing degree programmes in the UK at University of Hull and have remained passionate since about the links between academic preparation and clinical competence in nurse education.

My career in nursing practice spanned ten years before entering nurse education. During this time, I worked in critical care areas including cardiac surgery, coronary care and high-dependency medicine and hold a specialist qualification in cardio-thoracic nursing. I held a ward sister post for six years, in both coronary care and high-dependency areas. While a ward sister on coronary care, I was involved in establishing the first cardiac rehabilitation programme in Derby and have maintained an interest in this area through my teaching in applied health sciences.

My career in healthcare education has spanned both pre- and post-qualifying programmes and I have developed and delivered a wide range of programmes firstly at University of Nottingham , subsequently at University of Wolverhampton and most recently at the University of Derby. I maintain practice links in Derby with acute medical areas and visit regularly to support students on placement and the staff supporting them.

Membership of professional bodies

Additional interests and activities

I have experience as an external examiner at three other UK Universities where I have advised on standards of marking and assessment on their pre-qualifying nursing programmes.
