About

Dr Andrade is an academic and engineer interested in the application of advanced control and estimation techniques (nonlinear control, robust control, and optimal control among other approaches) to challenging practical engineering problems in electrical power systems and industrial automation.

Dr Andrade has a PhD degree in engineering (control systems), a master’s degree in systems engineering (control systems), and an engineer’s degree (BEng) in electrical engineering.

Dr Andrade has had further training and experience in control engineering involving PLC programming, industrial networks, and SCADA systems. Dr Andrade has also had training in LabVIEW, MATLAB/SIMULINK, and AutoCAD. These abilities, in addition to Dr Andrade's computer programming skills such as Pascal, Visual Basic, C/C++, and other software tools such as PSCAD, allow him to solve engineering problems, with substantial independence and creativity, and contribute to developing new products and services. Dr Andrade has also had further education in advanced control and estimation techniques from different European universities and institutes (European Embedded Control Institute, SUPELEC – Paris, France; Ecole d’Eté d’Automatique de Grenoble INPG – GIPSA Lab, Grenoble – France; Czech Technical University, Prague – Czech Republic; Instituto per le Applicazioni del Calcolo Mauro Picone, Monopoli/Bari – Italy; Technical University of Denmark, Denmark; Imperial College London and University of Leicester, UK.

Dr Andrade has work experience acquired in different industry sectors, e.g. recently in oil & gas and electrical power. In the past, Dr Andrade has been involved in designing and commissioning electrical installations for commercial and industrial plants, deployment of automation projects using PLCs and SCADA systems for different industry sectors, and application of advanced control and estimation techniques in several research projects.

Dr Andrade's background and industrial work experience allow him to analyse, design, and implement control systems and electrical systems using different state-of-the-art technologies and techniques.

At the moment, Dr Andrade holds the position of Lecturer in Electrical and Electronic Engineering in the College of Engineering and Technology at the University of Derby, UK.

Teaching responsibilities

Research interests

Dr Andrade's current research interests are the following:

  1. Development of advanced control and estimation algorithms (nonlinear control, robust control, and optimal control among other techniques);
  2. Diagnosis, prognosis, and condition monitoring of complex systems including deployment of fault detection, fault diagnosis, and fault tolerant systems;
  3. Analysis, design and evaluation of power converter control schemes;
  4. Modelling, control, and estimation of LCC-HVDC and VSC-HVDC transmission systems;
  5. Design, implementation, and verification of (real-time) control systems involving simulation models, software-in-the-loop, hardware-in-the-loop, physical prototypes, as well as new products for electrical power system applications involving power electronics and industrial applications;
  6. Simulation of control systems and estimation schemes for power electronics and High-Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) systems;
  7. Design and deployment of converter control algorithms for grid applications such as HVDC and Flexible Alternating Current Transmission System (FACTS);
  8. Mathematical optimization applied to control engineering problems and decision-making problems.

(1) Automated fault detection and diagnosis for the ALICE detector at the CERN LHC;

(2) Study of the ALICE data flow from the detector to the DAQ system including the trigger interaction;

(3) Diagnosis, prognosis, and condition monitoring of power converters using advanced estimation schemes;

(4) Improvement of power quality of grid connected electrical generation systems using a static compensator (STATCOM);

(5) Modelling, control, and simulation of the modular multilevel converter (MMC);

(6) Capacitor voltage and capacitance estimation in multilevel power converters using nonlinear observers;

(7) Design of multivariable PID controllers for VSC-HVDC systems;

(8) Analysis and simulation of voltage-balancing strategies for modular multilevel converters;

(9) Comparison study for exploring the properties of different phase locked loop schemes;

(10) Deployment of a microcontroller/DSP based self-tuning PID controller;

(11) Comparison study for exploring the properties of different bottomhole pressure estimation schemes in a managed pressure drilling system;

(12) Design of a fault detection system and hardware in the loop simulation of a power converter (or electrical machine);

(13) Design of a control system and hardware in the loop simulation of a power converter (or electrical machine).

Experience in industry

Dr Andrade recently worked as a Research & Development (R&D) engineer in the Centre of Excellence of Alstom Grid in Stafford, UK.

Alstom, with 93000 employees (at 31 March 2013) in around 100 countries, is a global leader in the world of power generation, power transmission and rail infrastructure and sets the benchmark for innovative and environmentally friendly technologies. Alstom is a world leading manufacturer of engineered solutions for electrical grid applications in utility and industry settings. Alstom Grid engineers are pioneers of High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems and have been a guiding light in this field for over 50 years.

The HVDC Research & Technology Department is at the forefront of worldwide innovation in HVDC and provides research for new power electronics applications for power systems. The System Concepts group is responsible for research into new and novel HVDC applications. Working at the forefront of HVDC technology means: patents, publications and collaborations are routine activities. This highly motivated team of enthusiastic engineers provides research for new power electronics applications for power systems, particularly for HVDC converters and the forthcoming HVDC Grid. This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which Alstom’s leading contribution has worldwide recognition.

As an R&D Engineer, Dr Andrade carried out research on advanced control and estimation techniques for HVDC power systems at Alstom's Centre of Excellence in Stafford, UK.

Dr Andrade's main duties were:

  1. Design and development of control algorithms;
  2. Analysis & evaluation of power converter control algorithms;
  3. Simulation of control systems for power electronics and HVDC systems;
