John joined the University of Derby in 2018 as Dean of Students, having previously worked at Sheffield Hallam University as Head of Department for Psychology, Sociology & Politics. During his time at Sheffield Hallam University he also had periods of managing the Department of Humanities and the Sheffield Institute of Education. He is a Psychologist with interests in the area of appetite and eating behaviour. John has held research posts at the University of Sheffield and University of Birmingham. John has taught at both undergraduate and postgraduate level and supervised a number of PhDs to completion. John was an elected member to the Association of Heads of Psychology Departments committee and during this time was their representative of the British Psychological Society’s Membership and Standards Board.

Teaching responsibilities

In his role of Dean of Students John’s focus is on ensuring that all our students receive an excellent experience while studying at the university, which encompasses all aspects of student life. He directly responsible for the university’s Libraries, Careers and Employability Team, Student Experience Team and the Social Mobility Unit.
