I have 30 years of experience in the field of social work inclusive of working with children and families in the community, residential care and working with older adults in a hospital setting. I have also worked closely with homeless individuals and families.

I specialise in teaching related to working with older adults and issues around capacity and Human Rights. I also teach an international perspective to Social work with an emphasis on the International Federation of Social Work agenda and in particular working with refugees and Asylum Seekers in the UK.

My research profile relates to looking at ancient concepts of care and translating this to modern practice with vulnerable and troubled service users. Concepts of the Irish term ‘Anum Cara’ or Soul Friend tied into Nature Therapy are working progressively towards publication.

Teaching responsibilities

I teach undergraduate and postgraduate social work courses. I teach assessment skills, risk analysis, and professional social work analysis throughout these programmes. I also teach on international social welfare, working closely with the community, in fields such as dementia care and working with refugees.

Professional interests

Horticultural therapy and ancient Celtic culture.

Research interests

I have an interest in ancient concepts of care and translating this into modern therapeutic practices with vulnerable service users. This work examines the complex relationship between modern and ancient psychotherapeutic models, in particular, the idea of "holding space" for trauma-related illnesses.
