About

I am a lecturer in Journalism and currently teach predominantly on the Journalism and Specialist Sports Journalism courses.

I worked for Reach plc for many years in various positions, the latest being a digital content editor, before I became a lecturer at the University of Derby.

My main expertise are online and multimedia journalism but I also have a background in print media.

Teaching responsibilities

I lead and teach a module on Specialist Online Sports Journalism and am also involved in teaching online production and multimedia journalism.

Research interests

My research focuses on constructive journalism, changing media diets, and the impact of news on mental health and wellbeing. This includes how people consume news through social media platforms and the reasons behind audience disengagement with negative news.

I am also interested in escaping the breaking news cycle and exploring the opportunity to go in-depth with stories and how this could facilitate interactions to cultivate a consistent, dedicated audience which effectively builds a community.

Membership of professional bodies

I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.

Experience in industry

I have worked as a journalist for 15 years, firstly in print for several regional newspapers across the country and more recently as a digital journalist for regional news websites. I am experienced in multi-platform content production, using analytics to monitor audience engagement and optimisation to fit with social media algorithms to sell content.

My experience in industry enabled me to understand the ever-changing media environment and gave me the ability to implement and develop strategies to take advantage of changing trends using key online search and storytelling tools. I continue to work as a journalist producing online and print content, mainly for magazines and websites in the East Midlands area.
