I am a senior lecturer in Events Management teaching at postgraduate and undergraduate level in Events Management. I am also programme leader for the professional courses in Events Management run with the University of Derby Corporate (UDC). As a current industry practitioner I ensure that the course material is not only relevant and current in relation academic theory, but is contextualised and relevant to current industry practice.

Teaching responsibilities

I currently lead the University's professional courses in Event Safety Management. This includes the Event Safety Diploma in association with Capita Symonds, the only current professional higher education course specialising in Event Safety Management. We have now in place a Postgraduate Certificate in Event Safety Management, which is tailored to suit the industry professional needs as well as ensuring their application and practice anticipates trends and changes in the law and industry.We are also about to deliver the higher diploma in Event Safety Management which includes a guide to temporary demountable structures which is delivered with Star Events Group.

I also work with Showsec through UDC in their own specialist events management prgramme which can lead to a full BA with honours and further.

I teach strategic risk management and crisis management at masters level, as part of the MA in Events Management.

At undergraduate level I teach at all levels. Subjects covered include event venue operations, events legislation and site design, strategic approaches to global events and sustainability for events management.

Professional interests

I am a chartered health and safety practitioner with the Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH) specialising in the Event Management field. I am also a member of the Occupational Safety and Health Consultants Register. I work with a number of event organisers and suppliers in enabling them to exceed statutory requirements and ensure their safety practice is not only current but has built in to it the process of continual improvement.

I work with a range of clients including Artichoke  Run Liverpool and Oranjecamping

As the Major Events Manager for Liverpool 2008 Captial of Culture , I worked developing systems and delivering its large scale events programme during the build up from 2004, its 800th Birthday in 2007 and the year itself in 2008. This included Beatles Spiders and Ships, Liverpool Sound the Paul McCartney Concert, La Princess- as well as the Tall Ships Visit 2008 and the Mathew Street Music Festival 2008.

I also work with the City of Rotterdam authorities in delivering Event Safety Management processes for their City.

Research interests

I am currently working with the HSE as part of one of the specialist groups re writing the Event Safety Guide - the practitioners bible.

I am also researching the impact of training and education in relation to events safety, as well as the safe management of large scale free public events.

Specialist Consultant in Event Safety Management, working with a number of local authorities; Event Suppliers, Community Event Organisers and private event companies in the UK, including most recently the Chinese New Year Celebrations Liverpool; Durham Lumiere.

Currently part of specialist re-writing the Event Safety Guide.
