Health, Social, and Community Work

University of Derby Online Learning

I began my career as a classroom teacher, and eventually became a behaviour support specialist, working with students whose behaviour restricted access to a successful education. My interest in substance abuse was piqued at this time, and I became an addictions counsellor. Although much of my studying has taken place online, I travelled to Hazelden/ Betty Ford in MN, during which time I was invited to  work for them at their Oregon facility. Back home in Bermuda, my counselling interest grew to include co-occuring disorders and behavioural addictions. I am a certified sex addiction therapist with IITAP (International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Specialists) and a member of ATSAC (Association for the Treatment of Sex Addiction and Compulsivity). I started work with UDOL in 2015 as a part time associate academic whlle working in private practice in Bermuda. I am delighted to now be a full time member of the team and to have returned to the UK after many years of living overseas.

Research interests

My research interests include addictions and their impact on the  family system. I hope to engage in research related to compassion focussed therapy and its use with addicts while here at Derby University.

I have two Cairn terriers, Jock and Skye. Jock is a trained therapy dog who visits care homes and hospices. They recently relocated with me from Bermuda to Derbyshire. Jock is hoping to resume his duties!
