I am Senior Lead in Learning Enhancement in the Department of Learning Enhancement with strategic responsibility for learning and teaching practice at the University of Derby. Working closely with learning technology colleagues I coordinate the Academic Practice Programme for the University and lead staff development supporting practice change in learning and teaching activity across the institution. I chair the Derby panel for the accredited Higher Education Academy process and support colleagues across the university in the development of claims for professional recognition and also lead on a number of projects working towards development of the student learning experience.

Teaching responsibilities

I teach across a range of subjects in creative music practice, scholarship and research. My principle areas of expertise are music composition and arrangement, song writing, popular music studies, creative studies, creative practice, and scholarship and research.

Professional interests

I am a classically trained violinist and composer and I maintain active engagement with commercial music composition, sound art/design and sound installation.

Research interests

My principles area of research interest is creativity in the arts and in education. With a focus on learning and teaching, I also maintain research activity in music composition, electronic music, sound art, sound installation, and theatrical sound design.

Membership of professional bodies

I am an Associate and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and active Member of the American Creativity Association.


Recent conferences

Experience in industry

I have professional experience in music production including as a session musician for Nizlopi, 2004 (Half These Songs Are About You, fdm), and for L'Ame Immortelle, 2004 (Als Die Liebe Starb, Gun Supersonic). I have also acted as Musical Director for Sopor Aeternus Ensemble of Shadows.

International experience

My principle areas of international experience relate to conference attendance and presentation including active membership of the American Creativity Association and the Torrance Centre for Creativity Studies at Drexel University in Philadelphia. I have presented in Greece, Latvia, and at many universities in the US and across the UK.
