About

I am a Lecturer in Earth Sciences at the University of Derby. My main areas of interest for both research and teaching are clastic sedimentology, reservoir characterisation, and the energy transition.

I have a BSc (Hons) in Geology and Chemistry from Keele University, and PhD as part of the NERC CDT in Oil and Gas focusing on analysing and quantifying mixed dryland fluvial and aeolian systems of southwestern USA and the Southern North Sea, UK. This led me to pursue several research positions focusing on developing multi-resolution reservoir models for carbon capture and storage, that take into account the multiple levels of heterogeneity within subsurface geology.

Teaching responsibilities

I am responsible for teaching on the Undergraduate Earth Sciences (BSc) degree Programme and the GeoEnergy (MSc) degree Programme, including being Module Leader for the following modules:

I also supervise student research projects at a BSc and MSc level.

Research interests

My primary research areas focus on quantifying and reconstructing ancient depositional environments and characterisation of subsurface with an application to carbon capture and storage projects. A particular focus of my research has been the study of dryland fluvial systems - their deposits and interaction with coeval depositional environments.

Qualifications

PhD (2016-2021) - The sedimentary architecture and spatial variations of dryland ephemeral fluvial systems - Keele University

Bsc Hons (2013-2016) - Geology with Chemistry (First Class) - Keele University

Recent conferences

I have presented my research at numerous national and international conferences and workshops with the most recent listed below:

Experience in industry

My PhD was part of the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) which provided bespoke academic, government and industry training.

I also undertook a Summer Internship at Equinor in Stavanger, researching and characterising source rocks in the South Atlantic, where my work fed directly into one of their larger projects.

My previous Research Fellow positions at the University of Aberdeen were part of a joint industry project with BP, CNOOC, Total Energies, Neptune & Neo Energy.

International experience

My PhD research involved extensive data collection in south-western USA, along with other field excursions across Spain, France and other areas across the globe. I've also presented my research at multiple international conferences in Canada, America, and across Europe.

Recent publications

Below are some of my most recent publications. Please see my ResearchGate and/or Google Scholar profiles for a more complete overview of my research.
