About

Lecturer in Illustration for the BA (Hons) Illustration programme.

Teaching responsibilities

I'm a Lecturer in Illustration, primarily for the BA (Hons) Illustration course, collaborating with all members of the teaching team, teaching across all year groups as well as MA courses in Visual Communication.

I'm also Programme Leader on the multi-disciplinary module Creative Interventions.

I'm a social media manager, in collaboration with my valued colleague, illustrator Pippa Curnick, for the department's Instagram account @debyuni_illustration_graphics.

Professional interests

I practice as a visual artist, freelance illustrator and storyboard artist working in publishing, advertising, animation, comics, and storyboarding for film & TV for a range of international clients. I collaborate with writers, art directors, copywriters, designers, and directors.

I have successfully co-created character concepts which have gone on to be published in the UK and abroad. I have extensive experience working on licensed intellectual properties such as Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog and related characters, Red Dwarf, and Powerpuff Girls.

I have exhibited my work at galleries in London, Stockholm, New York, and elsewhere.

Research interests

My research primarily involves ideation, character and IP creation, often in collaboration with writers and other creatives. I'm interested in exploring the intersection between traditional illustration and three-dimensional outcomes, particularly with a view towards exhibiting in galleries and elsewhere.

I have a long-standing interest in narrative art in comics, graphic novels and manga. This is a passion for me which includes all aspects of the creative process; from conception through to publication.

Having successfully co-organised and promoted the FOLD Fanzine Fest and the Pulped: Pop-Up Print fest, I'm keen to promote the integration of illustration, comics, & small-press self-publishing into local & national cultural hubs and venues. We have successfully collaborated with the GOSH! comic shop in London, who now stock our students' zines and comics.
