Course description

The advent of optical fibres has had a tremendous impact in the field of communications. However, the use of optical fibres is by no means limited to communication applications. In fact most, if not all, conventional sensors can be replaced by optical fibre sensors. Chemical, biochemical and physical optical fibre sensors have been developed.

This course introduces the basic operation of optical fibres, looks at the various optical modulation techniques and provides numerous real-world examples of fully operational optical fibre sensors. Single-point and distributed sensors will be discussed.
