Course description

This introductory course will introduce students to the basics of language acquisition theory from a range of perspectives: how do people learn a second language, and how can we teach to maximise that learning potential?

Students will learn about a range of TESOL methodologies such as communicative language learning, the task-based approach, the lexical approach and principled eclecticism. Students’ own language awareness will also be a focal point: we will look at the four language systems of grammar, lexis, phonology and discourse, and the four language skills of speaking, writing, listening and reading. Students will learn how to apply all of this linguistic knowledge to create lessons for whole-class teaching or small group support, examining strategies appropriate to a range of contexts.
