9.30 - 11.00: 'Democratise, Decarbonise & Decolonise - Exploring the Future of Higher Education

Welcome to the Festival of Learning 2021.

Over the last couple of years, the 3Ds  Democratise, Decarbonise & Decolonise – have emerged as key themes of debate related to the future trajectory of higher education, partly driven by student-led organisations such as SOS-UK. The opening session of the festival featured three speakers who highlighted key issues within these themes and their implications for the student learning and teaching experience. There was the opportunity to ask questions and for discussion.

  • Prof. Digby Warren (Professor of Higher Education - London Metropolitan University)
  • Anisha Johal (Voice and Insight Intern - Centre for Student Life
  • Meg Baker (Director of Education - Students Organising for Sustainability)

Chaired by Dr Chris Ribchester (Associate Professor in Learning and Teaching) and Dr Tamsin Bowers-Brown (Head of Social Justice & Pedagogic Practice Associate Professor of Learning and Teaching).

13.00 - 13.40: Knowledge Exchange – Synergies and opportunities to enhance learning and teaching

This session demystified what we mean by the term Knowledge Exchange and clearly set out the measurements which underpin the Knowledge Exchange Framework (KEF). Perhaps you are already undertaking ‘knowledge exchange’ and just don’t know it? The session supported attendees to understand and explore opportunities for knowledge exchange through case studies where colleagues have used their knowledge exchange activity to enhance the student experience. An opportunity to ask anything and everything about knowledge exchange!

  • Hosted by Dr Amanda Baxendale (Head of Research & Innovation Services) with colleagues from the University Research and Knowledge Exchange Office (URKEO):
    • Cara Roberts (ERDF Business Advisor)
    • Paul Moss (Intellectual Property and Commercialisation Manager)
    • Sima Ali Syed (Knowledge Exchange Assistant Manager)

14.00 - 14.40: Parallel sessions 2

15.00 - 15.40: Parallel sessions 3

10.00 - 11.00: 'What makes an inspirational lecturer?'

The Union of Students Education Awards provide a rich source of information about student perspectives on their learning and teaching experiences and on the staff who teach and support them. This session gave an analysis of the text provided in the nominations for this year’s awards and the common themes that emerged.

The nomination text opened up an opportunity for a critical dialogue about the approaches of the contemporary HE lecturer and a comparison with other studies exploring student perspectives of effective teaching was also provided.

Hosted by Dr Chris Ribchester (Associate Professor in Learning and Teaching) and Nina Cupric (Vice President: Education - Union of Students).
