George Kirkman, BSc (Hons) Sport Therapy and Rehabilitation
Where did you go for your work placement and what made you apply?
I worked at Britain's strongest man in Sheffield at the championships. This was an unmissable opportunity for me, getting to be a massage therapist for the strongest athletes in the UK so early on into my course was a fantastic opportunity.
What did you get involved with while you were there?
We worked with the athletes backstage giving them pre and intra event massages should they need them. I worked on two athlete’s pre and intra event. We also got to watch all the events with the athletes in their waiting area which was unreal being surrounded by the strongest athletes in Britain.
How will your work placement help with your studies?
As I’m hoping to go into a career as a sports therapist, having had this opportunity to work with the strongest athletes in Britain was fantastic, and will help me no end as I can say I’ve already had the experience of working with some of the best athletes around.
What was your favourite part of your work placement experience?
Watching the event in the waiting area with the other athletes was amazing. Also watching all the athletes warm up whilst being backstage was unreal.
What would you say to anyone interested in doing a work placement as part of their course?
Do it. It will help you with your course no end and you will gain valuable experience that you otherwise wouldn’t, and it will help you in your chosen career path.
