BA (Hons) Outdoor Leadership and Management (current student)
Pushed to achieve his full potential
Studying Outdoor Leadership and Management is equipping Joshua Anderson with the “full toolbox of experiences and skills” to help him become a competent and professional outdoor instructor.
Having just completed the first year of his studies, Joshua says: “My future ambitions are to travel and to work around the world, and this course is my stepping stone to achieving that.
“I’m thoroughly enjoying the mix of the practical and the theoretical. The degree is pushing me to achieve my potential in terms of both my academic capabilities and my physical abilities.
“Of course, being based in the incredible countryside of the Peak District is perfect for outdoor studies. The central location means that other parts of the country are easily accessible too.”
Joshua joined the University straight after completing his A-levels. The open day he attended, together with the enthusiasm of the lecturers he met there, was a major influence in his choice of course.
The highlight of his studies so far is the sheer breadth of the activities he has been able to pursue such as caving, climbing and paddling. He appreciates the chance to put the in-depth theory he is learning into practice on fieldtrips too. Throughout, he feels he is gaining a valuable understanding of how to organise and run outdoor instruction for different client groups.
In many ways, Joshua has already become an ambassador for the course, helping out at University events and open days. “This has been an extra boost to show that I set high standards and can present a positive image for the industry,” he explains.
His advice to prospective students following in his footsteps is: “Take every opportunity - don't waste it! Enjoy it and work hard.”
