Akinniyi Akinwumiju - MSc Applied Petroleum Geoscience
Tell us about the course you studied and how it fitted with your career aspirations?
I completed my Masters course in Applied Petroleum Geoscience at the University of Derby in 2011, and I have worked over the past five years as a Petroleum Geochemist and Basin Modeller for Integrated Geochemical Interpretation Limited based in Bideford, Devon.
What have been your biggest successes so far?
My biggest successes so far include getting a job as a Petroleum Geochemist and Basin Modeller at IGI immediately after completing my Masters course, and easily adapting to the working methods of the company. In essence, attending the course marked a new career path for me in the petroleum industry as I had not thought of being a geochemist prior to completing the MSc programme.
What was your main reason for choosing this course?
My main reason for choosing this course was to build on my existing knowledge mainly acquired from the previous two degrees I had already received in geology from my home country Nigeria.
Why did you choose to study the course at Derby?
My main reasons for choosing to study the course at Derby included the broad course content (covering both the theoretical and practical aspects of petroleum exploration and production) and the hands-on methods and approach to teaching the course.
How did the lecturers inspire you?
I was inspired by their highly positive and relevant knowledge/experience of the petroleum industry.
Tell us about the modules; what made them interesting?
The fact that many of the lecturers teaching the modules had previously worked within the industry made all modules very practical and interesting. I practiced with real-time data, which further developed the valuable interpretation skills that I now use daily at work.
What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?
The Petroleum Geoscience MSc at the University of Derby teaches students highly relevant topics and methods that are used widely in the industry. It puts you in an excellent position to build a large knowledge base that allows you to explore areas that you may not have come across in your undergraduate degree, and specialise in topics that are of particular interest to you. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this course to anyone wishing to work in the petroleum sector.
