Amanda Reeve, BSc (Hons) Zoology
Tell us about the course you’re studying and how it fits with your career aspirations?
I am currently studying Zoology to help with my current and future business plans with Bugs n Bones. I have aspirations to educate the children of this world in the land of lizards and snakes so the Zoology degree will give me a better and deeper understanding of these amazing creatures.
What have been your biggest successes so far?
In terms of University, just getting in! I am 35 years old with no college background, just GCSEs that are over 16 years old. With regards to Bugs n Bones, being a small trading company for the last six years has been amazing. It started as a “let’s see how it goes” and has made us become a household name for Bug parties.
What were your main reasons for choosing this course?
I want to understand where my animals have come from, what makes them who they are and why they are the way they are. Children have 1001 questions so a better understanding of it all enables me to answer their questions better.
How do your lecturers inspire you?
Their knowledge and understanding is fascinating. I am in awe of how much they know!!
Tell us about your plans for the future?
I have just signed paperwork to buy a café which will be turned into Derby’s first bugs and lizard themed café with live animals on show. Eventually I want an education centre specialising in exotic animals, bringing the world’s most amazing creatures to the public, allow handling – learn through play, and show how they should be kept as pets – if at all!
What would you say to anyone thinking of coming to study this course at the University of Derby?
I would tell prospective students that the lecturers here are incredibly well informed and knowledgeable about the subject. The course involves lots of variety and caters for all academic abilities. The support is amazing and available if you need it.
