We have around 300 research-active staff at Derby and 400 doctoral students. They are investigating subjects as diverse as cybercrime, Long Covid, mental health, biomedical science, greener forms of transport, and asylum seekers' experiences. Learn more about our people and their research.

Associate Professor in Microbiology

Dr. David Elliott is a microbial ecologist specialising in the roles of microbes in low productivity soils including drylands and the cryosphere. He leads the BSc (hons) Biology programme and teaches a variety of topics in Human and Environmental Sciences.

Research Professor in Criminology

As a Research Professor in Criminology, Stephen devotes most of his time to his own research interests (which include studying the impact of Thatcherism on crime and the criminal justice system, why people stop offending and the fear of crime), and helping colleagues develop their own research plans and careers.

Cath is a lecturer in modern British and European history and heritage, with research interests in nineteenth- and twentieth-century British Cultural, Social and Intellectual History.

Programme Leader and Lecturer in Forensic Psychology

Dr Dean Fido joined the University of Derby Online Learning in January 2018 as a Lecturer in Psychology before moving on cmapus to lead the MSc Forensic Psychology. After completing his PhD at Nottingham Trent University, he completed post-doctoral research at the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging (University of Oxford).

Academic Lead in Ergonomics

Academic Lead in Ergonomics, Dr Victoria Filingeri, completed her BSc Psychology with Ergonomics, MSc Health Psychology, PhD and postdoctoral research at Loughborough University, looking into crowd behaviour, rail safety (funded by the Rail Safety and Standards Board), teenagers trespassing (funded by Network Rail), and the ageing population.

Craig Fisher is Programme Leader for BA (Hons) Fine Art. He is a practising artist whose current research is concerned with exploring the pictorial, sculptural and ‘site specific’ boundaries of art practice.

Visiting Professor to the University of Derby Online Learning, Professor Dawn Forman, is a co-owner and director of Interactive Leadership and Management Development a consultancy specialising in executive coaching, leadership and team development and academic writing. Dawn has also been working on a freelance basis with universities and health services internationally.
