We have around 300 research-active staff at Derby and 400 doctoral students. They are investigating subjects as diverse as cybercrime, Long Covid, mental health, biomedical science, greener forms of transport, and asylum seekers' experiences. Learn more about our people and their research.

Associate Professor in Pre-Qualifying Health Care

As an Associate Professor in Pre-Qualifying Health Care, Charlie supports a range of interprofessional pre-and-post-qualified healthcare students, specialising in the teaching of research and evidence-based practice. Charlie is a registered adult nurse and has a special interest in the care of patients and families following head injuries.

Dr Bill Whitehead is the clinical lead for the University of Derby Covid 19 asymptomatic testing sites. Bill has a particular interest in the organisational structures within the healthcare industry related to supporting newly qualified nurses and practice and clinical education in general.

Associate Professor (Research) in Audio Engineering

Dr Bruce Wiggins teaches in our Audio Engineering disciplines. He focuses on immersive audio and digital signal processing. His research in immersive audio has led to international impact outside of academia, and was highlighted in our Research Excellence Framework exercise.

Academic Lead in Psychology, Dr Sophie Williams is a chartered psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS). Sophie's research interests lie in women’s health and long-term conditions, her research particularly focuses on Polycystic Ovary Syndrome and quality of life.

Andrew is an active lecturer and researcher. He is committed to developing students aspirational horizons whilst producing first class research in the areas of nationalism and marginal beliefs.

Chris is the Programme Leader for the BSc (Hons) Computer Games Programming course. 

Reader in Advanced Manufacturing

Paul is a reader in Advanced Manufacturing. Paul has gained extensive experience in advanced manufacturing spanning 36 years in the transport sector, both in industry and within HEI research organisations. He gained his PhD at the University of Aston by completing a manufacturing research project in continuous extrusion that was funded by British Nuclear Fuels.

Dr Woodward is a researcher in the Health and Social Care Research Centre, she carries out research in issues relating to public health and primary care. She has a background in psychology and expertise in both quantitative and qualitative research methods.

Dr Jianfei Xie is a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Derby. His research interests lie within fluid mechanics and heat/mass transfer and computational approaches.

Weiwei Yang
Senior Lecturer

Dr Weiwei Yang is a Senior Lecturer with substantial experience of teaching a wide range of subjects in Finance and Economics for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. She is programme leader for BSc Economics and Finance, and BSc Finance. She works closely with professional bodies for accreditations and acts as external examiner for another UK higher education institution.
