We have around 300 research-active staff at Derby and 400 doctoral students. They are investigating subjects as diverse as cybercrime, Long Covid, mental health, biomedical science, greener forms of transport, and asylum seekers' experiences. Learn more about our people and their research.

Professor in Learning and Teaching in Higher Education

As an Associate Professor in Teaching and Learning, Dr Turner supports teams and individuals across the University with their learning, teaching and assessment activities. He also teaches on biology and forensic science courses and has won external recognition for being an outstanding teacher.

Alistair Turvill is a lecturer in Early Childhood Studies. Alistair's primary responsibilities include leading the provision of health modules on the BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies and oversight of the foundation students entering the degree pathway.

Senior Research Technician in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Metabolomics

As a Research Technician, Marcela supports postgraduate students and academics across the College of Science and Engineering on implementing and advancing their research. She also currently works on her own project focusing on understanding metabolic dysregulation and Alzheimer's disease.

Associate Professor in Contemplative Psychology

Associate Professor in Contemplative Psychology, Dr William Van Gordon is a Chartered Psychologist and international expert in the research and practice of meditation and mindfulness.

Senior Lecturer (Medical Ultrasound)

Heather Venables is a Senior Lecturer in Diagnostic Imaging at the University of Derby. She has a long term interest in ultrasound technology and point of care ultrasound applications. Heather is an accreditor for the UK Consortium for Accreditation of Sonographic Practice (CASE) and represents the British Medical Ultrasound Society on CASE Council.

Lecturer in Psychology Dr Katia Vione joined the University of Derby in April 2017, having previously worked as a lecturer in Brazil and as a teaching assistant at Cardiff University.

Postgraduate Lecturer

Sharan is a nurse, non medical prescriber and postgraduate lecturer at the University of Derby. Her areas of specialist knowledge and skills are palliative and end of life care and advanced communication skills.
