Data Science Research Centre

Data is all around us. Every day, 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are created, and 90% of the data in the world today has been generated in the last two years. But very little of that data is used to its full potential.

Our new Data Science Research Centre is exploring pioneering ways to manage, process, analyse and obtain intelligence from data for maximum impact. It delivers a range of services to help researchers and organisations make better use of the massive volumes of raw information they gather.

Drawing on latest innovations in data analytics, the Internet of Things, complex networks, machine learning and artificial intelligence, the Centre is:

  • Mentoring the next generation of data scientists through opportunities for PhD and postdoctoral research
  • Offering facilities for researchers from other disciplines to use advanced computing techniques so they can glean key insights from the data generated through their own research projects
  • Enabling a wide range of businesses and public sector organisations to access cutting-edge expertise which will help them save time and money through smart decision-making.

From hospitals to local authorities, the financial sector to major engineering companies, the Data Science Research Centre can help organisations to streamline processes, anticipate problems before they arise, and target customers and clients more effectively.

Our Centre is distinctive in that it has a physical – rather than a virtual – presence. Based in the University’s new STEM building, it features high performance computing facilities and a state-of-the-art Data Visualisation Laboratory. It is a hub where students, researchers and industry partners can use advanced immersive visualisation technologies and interact with big data sets.

The Centre is supporting our educational programmes in Analytics (Joint Honours) and MSc Big Data Analytics, offering opportunities for final-year projects in applied data science and facilitating internships via our industry partners.

The Centre is staffed by a team of computer and data science specialists under the leadership of Professor Antonio Liotta who has a global reputation for research in this field.
