Images of Research: photography competition

How do you convey research and research impact through a single image?

Our research staff and students were set this challenge as an alternative way to capture and explain their research from a different angle and to different audiences.

After thoughtful deliberation, the judging panel announced the winners.

The 2021 Winners are...

Competition rules and guidance

  • Open to research students and research staff at the University of Derby only
  • Only one entry per individual
  • Entry opens on 24 May and closes 18 June
  • Submission by website form only
  • Title (80 characters) and descriptive copy (150 characters) must be included to be eligible
  • The copy should explain what your image shows and how it relates to your research. The copy must be accessible to a non-specialist audience
  • Images should be 2000x1333 pixels (mobile phones should support this - camera settings may need to be altered before photos are taken)
  • Images must be submitted as a JPEG or PNG file
  • Full terms and conditions are available

Entries will be judged based on the following criteria:

  • Did the image make the viewer want to know more about the research?
  • Did the descriptive copy communicate the story behind the image and how it relates to the research?
  • Was the descriptive copy written in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience?
  • To what extent does the submission as a whole (image and text) communicate the impact of the research on society, culture, the environment, or the economy?
  • Submissions need to meet the required specifications and eligibility criteria

The decision of the judging panel is final.

  • You must be the sole owner and author of your entry
  • The University of Derby retains the right to use all submitted images - including those not chosen to win prizes - in promotional materials and on the University website and social media channels without further permission from, or compensation to, the photographer. The use of images may also extend to online galleries. Credit will be given to the photographer if reproduced. The photographer will retain copyright
  • It is the responsibility of the photographer to secure permission from any identifiable persons in their photograph
  • The University of Derby shall not be liable in any way for a submission

1. The Promoter

The promoter is: University of Derby, Kedleston Road, Derby, DE22 1GB.

2. The competition

2.1 The title of the competition is RESEARCH IMPACT PHOTOGRAPHY COMPETITION

2.2 The Research and Knowledge Exchange office are inviting research staff and students to submit an image that showcases your research. The image should inform, intrigue and engage our staff and students and be accompanied by descriptive copy (150 characters) that gives context to how the image captures your research

3. How to enter

3.1 The competition will run from midday on 28th May 2021 (the "Opening Date") to 5pm on 18th June 2021 (the 'Closing Date') inclusive.

3.2 All competition entries must be received by the Promoter by no later than 5pm on the Closing Date. All competition entries received after the Closing Date are automatically disqualified.

3.3 To enter the competition:

3.4 No purchase necessary

3.5 The Promoter will not accept:

  1. responsibility for competition entries that are lost, mislaid, damaged or delayed in transit, regardless of cause, including, for example, as a result of any equipment failure, technical malfunction, systems, satellite, network, server, computer hardware or software failure of any kind; or
  2. transmission as proof of receipt of entry to the competition

3.8 Three winners will be selected, from all valid entries: one people's vote winner and two 'Judge's Choice'. The panel of judges will comprise two members and selection shall be based on the criteria outlined on the competition page. The decision of the panel of judges (acting reasonably) will be final.

3.9 The Promoter will send the full names of the judges to anyone who writes within one month after the Closing Date of the competition requesting details of the judges

4. Eligibility

4.1 The competition is only open to research staff and research students (PhD and Professional Doctorate) of the University of Derby aged 18 years or over, except such employees and students of the Promoter, their families, agents or any third party directly associated with administration of the competition.

4.2 In entering the competition, you confirm that you are eligible to do so and able to claim the prize. The Promoter may require you to provide proof that you are eligible to enter the competition.

4.3 The Promoter will not accept competition entries that are

  • automatically generated by computer;
  • completed by third parties or in bulk;
  • illegible, have been altered, reconstructed, forged or tampered with;
  • photocopies and not originals; or
  • incomplete

4.4. There is a limit of one entry to the competition per person. Entries on behalf of another person will not be accepted and joint submissions are not allowed.

4.5 The Promoter reserves all rights to disqualify you if your entry or conduct on the Promoter's premises is contrary to the spirit or intention of the prize competition.

5. The prize

5.1. Each winner will receive a £100 Amazon eVoucher.

5.2 There is no cash alternative for the prize. The Promoter reserves the right to substitute the prize with a prize of equal or greater value.

5.3 The prize is not negotiable or transferable

5.4 The winners will be notified via email by 4pm on 2nd July 2021 using the email address provided with the competition entry. If a winner does not respond to the Promoter within 48 hours of being notified by the Promoter, then the winner's prize will be forfeited, and the Promoter will be entitled to select another winner in accordance with the process described above

5.5 The eVoucher will be emailed to the winners in July 2021. The Promoter is not responsible for any lost, damaged or delayed items

6. Winners

6.1 The decision of the judges nominated by the Promoter is final and no correspondence or discussion will be entered into

6.2 The Promoter must either publish or make available information that indicates that a valid competition took place. To comply with this obligation the Promoter will send the surname and county of major award winners and, if applicable copies of their winning entries, to anyone who emails or writes to Student research Office, University of Derby, Kedleston Road, Derby, DE22 1GB (enclosing a self-addressed envelope) within one month after the closing date stated above. If you object to any or all of your surname, county and winning entry being published or made available, please contact the Promoter by emailing In such circumstances, the Promoter must still provide the information and winning entry to the Advertising Standards Authority on request.

7. Limitation of liability

Insofar as is permitted by law, the Promoter, its agents or distributors will not in any circumstances be responsible or liable to compensate the winner or accept any liability for any loss, damage, personal injury or death occurring as a result of taking up the prize except where it is caused by the negligence of the Promoter, its agents or distributors or that of their employees. Your statutory rights are not affected.

8. Ownership of competition entries and intellectual property rights

8.1 The Promoter does not claim any rights of ownership in your competition entry

8.2 You agree that the Promoter may, but is not required to, make your entry available on its website [] and any other media, whether now known or invented in the future, and in connection with any publicity of the competition. You hereby grant the Promoter a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free, irrevocable licence, for the full period of any intellectual property rights in the competition entry, to use, display, publish, transmit, copy, edit, alter, store, re-format and sub-licence the competition entry for promotion purposes and for its non-commercial teaching, research and other academic purposes.

9. Data protection and publicity

9.1. The Promoter will only process your personal information as set out in the privacy policy. See also condition 6.2, with regard to the announcement of winners.

10. General

10.1 If there is any reason to believe that there has been a breach of these terms and conditions, the Promoter may, at its sole discretion, reserve the right to exclude you from participating in the competition.

10.2 The Promoter reserves the right to hold void, suspend, cancel, or amend the prize competition where it becomes necessary to do so.

10.3 These terms and conditions shall be governed by English law, and the parties submit to the exclusive jurisdiction of the courts of England and Wales.
