Title: Applications of auralization in live sound reinforcement

 

Project Overview:

Auralizaton of real listening environments using binaural simulation techniques has become increasingly common in many branches of audio/acoustics over the past few decades. To date, the technology hasn’t been applied in live sound reinforcement. This project focuses on the development of hardware and software to allow professional live sound engineers to use real-time auralization to enhance their ability to deliver acceptable sound throughout large performance venues. There are many challenges involved with this, including devising a wireless measurement procedure for multi-element sound systems as well as creating a real-time digital signal processing algorithm that seamlessly interfaces with existing equipment. Additional applications to be explored in this work include use within theatre ticketing systems, live sound reinforcement education, public engagement events/activities and virtual reality.

The research project will be conducted within a research team at College of Engineering and Technology, The University of Derby comprising academics, post-doctoral researchers, and technical staff. You will have access to state-of-the-art facilities at the University which has a strong multidisciplinary approach to research and innovation in the fields of materials, manufacturing, data science, mathematics and built environment.

Teaching responsibilities

Prospective candidates will also have a post graduate teaching assistant (PGTA) status within the College. On average over a calendar year a PGTA should be prepared to spend a maximum of 250 hours on teaching-related duties. These duties include teaching contact, preparation and any assessment. In practice during semesters, which extend for about 24 teaching weeks per year, the PGTA may expect on average to be engaged in teaching-related duties for about 10 hours per week. This teaching-related work should rarely exceed 20 hours in a week. In addition to days in which no engagement is expected, there should be at least a further 16 weeks each calendar year when the PGTA has no teaching duties. There is no remuneration in respect of these teaching duties. In addition to their teaching duties which automatically contribute towards their teaching development, the successful candidate is also expected to commit a minimum of a further 17 hours per week over 45 weeks each year to their programme of personal research.

Entry Requirements

At least a 2.1 Honours degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Materials Engineering or any other Applied Science.
