AHE PhD Studentship in Journalism - Studentship & Funding opportunities - University of Derby

Postgraduate Studentship in Journalism

College of Arts, Humanities and Education, University of Derby

The College of Arts, Humanities and Education invites applications for a fully-funded Post-graduate Studentship in the subject area of Journalism. The studentship will be granted in the form of a Postgraduate Teaching Assistantship (PGTA). This means that, alongside your research, you will be expected to undertake a limited amount of teaching through which you will contribute to the wider University community and have the opportunity to develop wider academic skills.

The candidate will propose a study within the scope of Journalism. It might cover the changes in organisational structures, technological changes, the audience shifts to different platforms, millennials and post-millennials relations with news, alternative formats of non-fictional storytelling, industrial strategies, social media, or ubiquitous news flows. However, other themes relevant to Journalism might be considered too.

Principal Accountabilities

  • To undergo research and scholarly activity associated with their PhD programme and develop a publication record in media and communications
  • To teach on programmes and modules within the agreed curricula for Humanities and Arts, particularly within the area of media, communication and journalism
  • To support the Head of Subject and Programme Leaders in media, communications and journalism
  • To observe and implement University policies and procedures

This is a Postgraduate Teaching Assistantship post, and the successful candidate will undertake a full time traditional route PhD programme. If appointed, you’ll receive £14,553 per annum (p.a.) for three years. On this occasion, the studentship is available only to applicants assessed as being UK/EU for fees assessment. There is also - subject to satisfactory progress – an extra £1,000 p.a. for professional development purposes. Tuition fees will be fully covered at a UK/EU level.  Funding will be awarded for a period of up to three years subject to satisfactory progress.
