Postgraduate research degrees
You can apply for a research degree at any time of the year
Postgraduate research students can enrol at the University of Derby any time between August and May.
All enrolments are arranged by appointment once your application is successful. Please be aware that it can take between six and twelve weeks to consider a complete application.

To apply for a place on a research degree programme, please send the Research Student Office:
- a completed RD02 MPhil-PhD Application Form
- copies of degree certificate(s) and transcript(s)
- a copy of the photo page of your passport (showing name, date of birth, etc)
- a copy of your IELTS certificate (must be a recent qualification gained within the past 2 years)
- two signed academic references (standard RD03 Academic Reference Form can be used, or alternatively letters of reference can be provided).
All documents can be scanned and emailed. We cannot process an incomplete application; all forms listed above must be fully completed, and all supporting documentation must be present. We retain your personal data for a period of at least three months from the date of our last communication during the application process; after that time, if we have not heard from you, your application data is destroyed/disposed of securely in line with personal data protection legislation.
Most suitable applicants will be called for interview. This gives us the opportunity to explore your academic experience and knowledge of specific subjects.
We hold open days and open evenings throughout the year.
The information that is supplied on applications will be held and processed in line with the Data Protection Act 1998, GDPR and subsequent legislation.
Information will be used by the UoD (as Data Controller) to assess applicants’ suitability to be accepted onto the course they have applied for, we may also use this data for consideration of an alternative course. In addition applicant data may be used for statistical analysis. We may contact applicants to request any additional information that we require to enable us to consider applications in full or to invite them to interview where applicable. We will contact applicants to inform them of the progression of applications and to provide additional information to support successful candidates through to enrolment and start on the programme of study.
We retain this data for 10 years on successful acceptance to the University when candidate information will be converted to create a student record, after such time it will be securely destroyed. Where candidates do not progress to study, their data will be retained for a period of 2 years; after that time it is deleted securely. It will be shared externally with other departments within the University to ensure fair assessment of applications and to provide relevant support services.
