About the event

Exploring critical and inclusive approaches to career thinking.

The workshop is free and aimed at COCAG members, all careers professionals and open to everyone involved in careers work.

In this workshop, Rie Thomsen and Tristram Hooley share how career researchers and career professionals can use a short, 45–60 minute format Critical Careers workshop as a tool to engage the general public and anyone interested in dialogue and practical exercises. The activities encourage more sophisticated and emancipated ways of thinking about careers.

The workshop is targeted at union members and representatives, students across all study programmes, as well as employees and workplaces.

It is based on the short Careers book, published as part of the COCAG project by Aarhus University Press, and freely available as both an e-book and an audiobook. Participants will also find ready-to-use slides on the COCAG website, designed to support the use of the book for public engagement.

About the book

What does it mean to have a career, and should we always pursue our dreams? In this thought-provoking book, Rie Thomsen and Tristram Hooley challenge the myths and ideals associated with careers. With wit and wisdom, they provide a keen examination of societal expectations, encouraging readers to rethink what careers really entail. This book is not a guide but a conversation starter—offering reflections on the twists, turns, and detours of life. What influences the choices we make? How do we find direction in a world that is constantly changing?

In Reflections, scholars share engaging insights on key concepts. These pocket-sized books present unique perspectives on a wide range of topics, entertaining and enlightening readers with exciting discoveries and fresh viewpoints.
