Data Science Research Centre

Data is all around us. And our new Data Science Research Centre is exploring pioneering ways to manage, process, analyse and obtain intelligence from this data for maximum impact.

Using data to change the world

Every day, 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are created, and 90% of the data in the world today has been generated in the last two years. But very little of that data is used to its full potential.

That's where our Data Science Research Centre comes in. We deliver a range of services to help researchers and organisations make better use of the massive volumes of raw information they gather.

Our cutting-edge expertise helps businesses and public sector organisations save time and money through smart decision-making.

The centre

The Data Science Research Centre is based in the University’s STEM Centre at Markeaton Street. It features high-performance computing facilities and a state-of-the-art Data Visualisation Laboratory. The centre aims at playing a leading role in the region and nationally in research and development, teaching and training.

We work closely with our partners in the industry in areas that include rail, manufacturing, biomedical and the environment. Our aims are:

Our work

We work with businesses, organisations and other research disciplines to help them gain insights from their data, streamline processes, anticipate problems before they arise, and target customers and clients more effectively.

Our researchers draw on the latest innovations in data analytics, the Internet of Things, complex networks, machine learning and artificial intelligence. We have helped hospitals and local authorities, businesses from the financial sector and major engineering companies.

We also offer facilities for researchers from other disciplines to use advanced computing techniques so they can glean key insights from the data generated through their own research projects. And we mentor the next generation of data scientists through opportunities for PhD and postdoctoral research.

Our expertise

The Data Science Research Centre evolves around all aspects of data and is composed of four interconnected clusters. We have expertise in Cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Data Visualisation and the Internet of Things (IoT) and distributed computing.
