Accounting Research Cluster

What we do

Accounting, broadly speaking, is the language of business. Many accounting issues require investigation in order to understand their meaning. These are then, rightly or wrongly, attached to the resultant accounting figures used and relied upon by different stakeholders for decision making.

The Accounting Research Cluster of Derby Business School is formally known as the Accounting, Accountability and Ethics Group (AAEG). We research issues within these themes to produce theoretical and empirical research. Our research is at the forefront of bringing solutions to organisational problems for growth and sustainability. We research these themes across private, public and charity-sector organisations.

Our research themes

Accounting

We research all issues that can be investigated within accounting and its components:

We look at information disclosure and transparency around the information these issues produce within organisations that is useful for planning and coordination. We also look at how the information affects the society at large.

We are particularly interested in investigating the value relevance of what constitutes accounting information, whether qualitative or quantitative. We are experts in pedagogic [related to teaching], applied and industrial research that can solve planning, accounting and business problems.

Accountability

We examine issues around factors that shape and will continue to shape accounting numbers:

We are also interested in the components of corporate governance and corporate social responsibility.

Corporate governance

We explore various and sometimes conflicting issues in corporate governance (CG) and its mechanisms. We are interested in examining ways in which CG mechanisms influence and shape accounting information, organisational growth and sustainability.

Corporate social responsibility

We have expertise that enables us to examine a wide range of issues in corporate social responsibility (CSR) both from theoretical and practical perspectives. In particular, we are interested in sustainability issues and their impact on accounting numbers and accounting information. We also look at how these, in turn, impact stakeholders and the society at large.

Ethics

Ethical issues and what they portend for accounting profession are of interest to us.
