Data Science Research Centre

Data is all around us. And our new Data Science Research Centre is exploring pioneering ways to manage, process, analyse and obtain intelligence from this data for maximum impact.

Our impact

Every day, 2.5 quintillion bytes of data are created, and 90% of the data in the world today has been generated in the last two years. But very little of that data is used to its full potential.

That's where our Data Science Research Centre comes in. We deliver a range of services to help researchers and organisations make better use of the massive volumes of raw information they gather.

Our cutting-edge expertise helps businesses and public sector organisations save time and money through smart decision-making.

Global reputation

The Data Science Research Centre is led by Professor Antonio Liotta, who has a global reputation for research in this field, and it is staffed by a team of computer and data science specialists. It supports our educational programmes in Analytics (Joint Honours) and MSc Big Data Analytics, offering opportunities for final-year projects in applied data science and facilitating internships via our industry partners.

Our Centre is distinctive in that it has a physical – rather than a virtual – presence. Based in the University’s new STEM Centre, it features high-performance computing facilities and a state-of-the-art Data Visualisation Laboratory. It is a hub where students, researchers and industry partners can use advanced immersive visualisation technologies and interact with big data sets.

What is Data Science?

Data Science is the new statistics. It has even been called "the sexiest job of the 21st century" by Harvard Business Review. As more and more data is produced in our technological marvel of a world, fully understanding that data and how best to use it is a key task. This is Data Science.

Our Data Science Research Centre works with businesses, organisations and other research disciplines to help them gain insights from their data.

Our work

Our Data Science Research Centre can help organisations to streamline processes, anticipate problems before they arise, and target customers and clients more effectively. We work with public-sector organisations from hospitals to local authorities, and with businesses from the financial sector to major engineering companies.

We draw on the latest innovations in data analytics, the Internet of Things, complex networks, machine learning and artificial intelligence.

We also offer facilities for researchers from other disciplines to use advanced computing techniques so they can glean key insights from the data generated through their own research projects. And we mentor the next generation of data scientists through opportunities for PhD and postdoctoral research.
