To obtain the Postgraduate Diploma (PG Dip) award, you would need to complete 120 credits by studying all modules except the Independent Research in Sport and Exercise module.

Advanced Research Methods

This module is designed to develop your knowledge in order for you to effectively and competently carry out the design, data collection, analysis and reporting of Masters level research. All areas of the research process will be covered both in terms of practical skills and critical understanding. The ability to justify methodological processes, as well as the ability to appropriately implement these in a range of research situations will be acquired and assessed.

Athlete Performance Management in Practice

This module is designed to introduce and develop the key skills and competencies of a strength and conditioning practitioner, through both taught content and exposure to applied experience. Lectures and workshops will provide you with an in-depth understanding of relevant theory and the practitioner skills associated with the provision of strength and conditioning. You will engage in the supervised delivery of 150 hours’ worth of applied practitioner services to athletes or teams and reflect on your professional and personal development resulting from this experience. The module is formulated to support you in preparing for applied work in the field of strength and conditioning, the focus of the latter being based on their pathway, interests, and career aspirations.

Strength and Conditioning Science

This module will explore concepts that underpin athletic performance and develop your advanced understanding of strength and conditioning theory. The module is designed to develop your ability to apply advanced theoretical knowledge within your practice. The module will focus on key principles that inform physical adaptation and training, and you will build an in-depth knowledge of the science that underpins training prescription and performance. You will also further develop your ability to collect, analyse and interpret athlete data to inform training and intervention and in doing so expand on your data collection skills and use of relevant equipment and technologies.

Advanced Resistance Training Methodologies

This module provides you with the opportunity to advance your theoretical knowledge and applied competency in a range of resistance training methodologies. Building on foundational content delivered earlier in the programme, you will critically engage with contemporary literature and practices surrounding resistance training prescription, programming, and practical delivery. Through a blend of interactive lectures and practical workshops, you will explore advanced techniques e.g., velocity-based training, accentuated eccentric loading, cluster sets etc. The module is designed to simultaneously enhance theoretical understanding and applied coaching skills so that you can programme, deliver, and justify training interventions across a variety of athletic and performance contexts.

Field-Based Conditioning and Monitoring

The ability to express key physical qualities under pressure and repeat high-intensity actions in context is central to athletic performance. This module will aim to examine and critically analyse advanced training methods used to enhance athletic performance. There will be a specific focus on speed, agility, plyometric, and metabolic conditioning. You will explore the underpinning neuromuscular, biomechanical, and physiological principles of each modality, alongside the technical and coaching skills required to effectively implement them.

Emphasis will be placed on the integration of these methods into sport-specific programmes that reflect the demands of competition, athlete profiling, and individualised needs. This will be undertaken through critical evaluation of evidence-based strategies for programme design, exercise progression, and integration within a performance environment. You should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the influence of sport demands, athlete profiling, data monitoring and the wider context of the environment on the application of these methods.

Independent Research in Sport and Exercise

In this module, you will undertake an independent piece of research specific to your subject area within sport and exercise science. This involves the planning, design, organisation and conduct of a research study which draws upon research methods and skills that you develop throughout the programme. You will be supported by a small number of taught sessions throughout the module and will work closely with your supervisor to propose a suitable research study and define your aims and objectives.

Throughout the process, you will work independently to progress your research, and supervisors will provide critical advice and guidance on the application of the methods, the interpretation of the data, and the communication of the research in a thesis. You are expected to build confidence in your effectiveness as researchers capable of contributing significant new knowledge and understanding to your discipline.

Please note that our modules are subject to change - we review the content of our courses regularly, making changes where necessary to improve your experience and graduate prospects.

How you will learn

The programme focuses on both students’ professional and personal development and, therefore, the next generation of creative, effective, and well-prepared practitioners who will positively impact the industry. The programme also opens doors as it represents an integrated learning opportunity that supports students to build on their prior knowledge through postgraduate study, and beyond to applied training.

Some modules use a more traditional method of learning and teaching however there will be many practical sessions based in our specialist laboratories and sports centre. All modules offered on the programme are based on the standard 20 credit module, or multiples thereof, where 20 credits reflect 200 learning hours encompassing engagement with study materials, participation in interactive activities, directed reading, self-directed reading, reflection and preparation for assessment.

The Independent Research in Sport and Exercise module forms a considerable part of the programme. Conducting the project will provide you with practical, technical and analytical skills. By being largely self-directed, you will develop a number of skills transferable to employment, such as project management, independent thinking, the exercise of initiative and decision making.

Upon enrolment, you will be allocated an academic tutor who will act as an academic counsellor to provide support and guidance throughout your studies.

How you will be assessed

You will be required to demonstrate advanced knowledge, systematic understanding, critical awareness, a comprehensive understanding of techniques, critical evaluation and/or original application of knowledge. Assessments will require you to integrate knowledge and skills acquired in taught sessions with substantial additional information and evidence they have identified using your research literacy skills.

Learning and teaching methods will vary between modules and could include:
