Finding a Global Perspective

Odinaka Pascalyn Ubeh knew she wanted to study a degree that would bring a global perspective to her industry experience. Faced with a difficult choice after earning offers from multiple UK universities, including the chance to study a Masters in Food Science, it was our MSc International Hospitality and Tourism Management course that proved her perfect fit.

"With over three years of experience managing a restaurant in Nigeria, I felt drawn to something broader: a degree that would connect my practical experience with a global perspective. That's how I chose the University of Derby's MSc in International Hospitality and Tourism Management."

Inspiring teaching

Pascalyn was inspired by the teaching on the course and the real-world insights the lecturers bring to the classroom to bring their teaching to life. She says:

“The lecturers are inspiring. They don’t just teach; they connect the theories to reality with genuine passion. They use real-life examples, encourage open discussions, and push us to think critically. Honestly, I can’t even pick a favourite because every one of them brings something unique and valuable to the classroom.”

A sustainable future

The MSc International Hospitality and Tourism Management places great emphasis on creating solutions for a sustainable future, with a curriculum built around themes from the United National Sustainable Development Goals. Pascalyn found that this knowledge not only transformed her approach to sustainability, but also broadened her perspective on business as a whole.

“Throughout my studies, I’ve gained rich knowledge in sustainability, ethical business practices, marketing, destination management, place branding, experience design, and innovation. One of the most transformative lessons for me has been understanding that sustainability is not just a fancy term we hear often, it’s a practical and urgent way of thinking that affects how we live and how businesses should operate. I’ve come to understand that chasing profit without care for people and the planet leads to imbalance. The idea of the Triple Bottom Line which is People, Planet, Profit, has changed the way I see business altogether.”

Reflecting on her time studying on the degree, Pascalyn describes how it helped her grow, gain confidence and discover her career path:

Looking back, choosing Derby wasn’t just a good decision, it was a life-changing one. I’ve grown academically, professionally, and personally. I came here uncertain, but now I'm confident, empowered and I see clearly the path I want to follow and I’m ready for it.
