Discover postgraduate study at the Derby International Business School video transcript

Hi everyone and welcome to our Discover Postgraduate Study with Derby Business School webinar.

And thank you for joining us today. So today we're going to cover the courses we offer, how to fund your studies, and our industry connections as well. So the webinar will be hosted by Doctor Nicola Lynch who's the head of Derby Business School.

If you have any questions throughout the presentation, please drop them in the Q&A box and we’ll run through those at the end.

So I now hand you over to Nicola, who will be presenting to you.

Hello, everybody. It's lovely to welcome you all to our virtual Derby today. As Emily said, my name is Nicola and I am head of Derby Business School.

So it's my pleasure today to talk a little bit to you about the University of Derby, who we are, but very importantly as well, who we are in terms of derby business School and the programs that we offer at a postgraduate level.

I suppose the first question you may ask yourself is why study at the University of Derby? and we’re, you know, as an institution, we're an applied university, which implies that everything that we do, the learning that you do within the business school in particular, you obviously learn core theory related to your business topics, but that's applied in a real business context.

So you get to work with real businesses, network with real businesses, etc.. So everything that you're doing has that real world applicability.

As well as all of that. You know, the most recent updates in terms of league tables, Uni Compare of showing here on your screen. And we're very proud to have been ranked second for employability in the University Compare rankings 2026, second for course quality. And we were ranked in the top ten in terms of overall university, which we're exceptionally proud of. And that's a survey which gathers all students feedback.

So it's our students who are ranking us that highly, and as well as all of that, if you are a student who comes and wants to live in Derby, we have been in terms of our Global Student Living awards for 22, 23 and 24. We were rated best in terms of University housing in the UK and Ireland.

So I think in summary, what these core stats show you is that we look after our students in terms of the support they're given around employability, the development of employability skills and seeking jobs post-graduation, your course quality, but also in terms of the accommodation etc. that we provide is absolutely top class.

I mention very briefly around accreditations, and we've got professional accreditations across the wide spectrum of programmes that we have within the business school.

And you may wonder, well, well, what does a professional accreditation mean? And the best example I can give is that when we are developing our programmes, we are ensuring  that they are aligned with the industry standard accreditation.

So for example, if you are a student who's studying accounting, you will be working towards your professional accounting accreditations or those exemptions. So when we developed the Accounting and Finance programme, we worked in partnership with ACCA, CMA, CPA Australia and the ICW to ensure that the learning that you're doing, the content that you're covering maps to those, papers and where you will get as much as the assumptions that you can possibly can by studying our accounting and finance programmes.

So as you will have some type of study when you go into the world of work, but, you know, very much we do as much as we can within curriculum. Exactly the same.

We've got CMI, which is the Chartered Management Institute across some of our programmes, for supply chain and logistics, we have the Chartered Institute for Logistics and Transport, CILT.

From a university perspective, or sorry, from a business school perspective, we are very aware of our responsibility around response management in education. So we're signatories and very active in the world of PRIME.

And that alludes to that every single programme that we have very much has the SDGs embedded within it.

And we we need to make sure that you, our learners are very much aware and are learning and applying, various different theories, practices and applying that knowledge and the real context around responsible leaders, responsible management, etc.

We are a member of the Chartered Association of Business Schools, and we also have recognition for the work that we do around enterprise and entrepreneurship in education.

So we have the small business charter award. We also have EFMD global membership, and our undergraduate accounting and finance programme has the EFMD accreditation.

But as well as that actually as of December this year, and I see that the accreditation is just missing from the screen. But we are members of AACSB as well, that global network of leading business schools around the world.

We very much put an emphasis on supporting our students in terms of your employability skills, but also if you actually want to start your own business and, you know, the first stat there shows that 143 students started a business or registered as sole traders while they were studying with us. We have supported our students in terms of being employed as an intern or a graduate with over 600 students that we've supported, from that perspective. And obviously as a university institution, our unit of our research is extremely important. And we have academics within the business school who are ranked in the top 2% in the world for the research that they're doing.

One of those is Professor Jose Arturo Reyes. He's our head of the Research Centre for Supply Chain Improvement and his research, you know, is recognised globally. But aside from that, it's used by industry and also José teachers on our MSC supply chain logistics programme. So he's bringing that global standing, his international reputation back in  and teaching our students and sharing that knowledge with them is so important. For all of our students.

So building on from that, you know, we've got various different research expertise across accounting, economics and finance, marketing, supply chain logistics, HRM, leadership, and the list is endless. Hospitality, tourism, etc.

What is very important for us, though, is that our researchers, obviously they're producing and they're publishing in academic journals, but they're also working with industry and so much so that their research is applied. They're taking that research and they're bringing it back into the classroom.

So our programmes are research-led and research-informed. Our first is really important so that you, our learners, are learning and working with leaders in that particular, sector and that particular subject area.

And I've just given a couple of examples there of some of the research clusters that we have. So you've got delivering the goods with lean logistics, you know, help and work that we do around businesses and supporting them to grow and develop. So we've got a lot of academics working in that area and strategy support to greener economy.

Aside from all of that, obviously our academics are working in that area. But across a number of the programmes for students, particularly studying a postgraduate, you may choose to pick and apply a project that aligns with some of our research clusters.

And that's why I showcase some of this, because depending on the subject that you're interested in, you may work with our academics and take a real project as part of your dissertation. So you get that tangible research you can do, to form an output which which you can take maybe going forward and showcase your work in terms of, what you've done while you studied at university and really showing that impact you can have at a research level as well, working with our colleagues in the business school.

Very excited that we have our new business school opening in September, just a couple of months now. So the beautiful building you're seeing on the screen is called the Cavendish Building. And that will be the home for our business school within the city centre from this September.

It's a seven-storey building, has absolutely state of the art facilities, very large lecture theatre, a Harvard lecture theatre. So that really nice 90 seat capacity. But very importantly has a finance lab, a virtual reality lab. We've got a creativity lab on the ground floor, which is about, you know, you having that room and space to start thinking differently, becoming, you know, get some new ideas, being innovative and creative. And we've also got a floor for executive education, etc.

What we will have within that building as well is businesses co-locating with us. So we’re referring to the business school is a living lab. So we've got our students, we've got our academics, and we will have businesses all located under one roof.

So for you as business school students, there's this huge opportunity. Obviously you're you're studying with the academics, the leaders in their field, but also working in that building with businesses co-locating with us. And we've got a number of businesses secured to co-locate in the building from various different sectors, aligning to our, our subjects and programmes that we're running within the business school as well.

Just to show you some of the space that's there, as I'd mentioned, the Creativity Lab, VR suite, etc., but lots of space within the building, both on the first floor and second floor. We've got a digital library resource and study space for you, and lots of informal collaborative learning spaces. And we recognise that everybody has different needs in terms of how you would like to study. I like a nice quiet space. Other people like nice, vibrant open spaces.

And what we've done within this building is tailored for all of our learner needs. So for all of your needs, how you would like to study in that building we've tried to cater for and that's really exciting in terms of, you know, you having that first class experience studying with us at the University of Derby and in particular in the business school.

You may have and we may have on this call today in this webinar, some students with ideas of how you want to start your own business. And on the first floor of the building, we have an incubator space or  start up space, for you to go and start sharing those ideas, but also to get the support from our enterprise team on how to develop that forward further into a full business idea, business case, venture, whatever it may be.

So really, you know, within this space and studying within that building with us, you will be working with your academics, you have the opportunity to network with the businesses located there, but also hopefully, you know, you may have that entrepreneurial idea that you want to get support for. And that's absolutely something that we can cater for as well. At the Derby Business School and wider University of Derby,

We are very proud, to be based in Derby. And actually one of the reasons for that is the really good industry links we have both within Derby and the wider region. We've very strong industry partnerships which are just shown on the slide there for you. That is just a sample snapshot of business school firms, Money Global, as you will see.

But also, you know a number of other local firms as well. And really we work with those businesses either within the curriculum. So where they come in to give guest lectures or they may give a live project. So that would be, for example, if someone is studying a marketing module, for example, they would give a life brief and that brief would be you working on a particular challenge the businesses facing.

And that forms part of your assessment. So really getting those tangible work experience opportunities while you study with us. We've used industry to feed into our and inform our curriculum so that we are ensuring that we are imparting knowledge to you that is absolutely relevant for the sector you want to work in, in the subject area that you want to develop your expertise in. Throughout the business school and throughout the university and careers and Employment service.

But we will have careers colleagues based within the business school in the Cavendish building with us as well, who would be there to help and support you in terms of looking at your CV, prepping you for interview or assessment centres, whatever support you may need to get you to that point where you are having an interview, presenting yourself and securing the graduate role or whatever role you want to do, post your masters and post your degree. That's really important for us that we are supporting you from our perspective, and that support is available for you through the business school and the careers and employment service.

So the question is, and I'm hoping a lot of you know this already given you're on this call. But but why study a Masters?

It may be a different reason for each of you that's on this call today, but it's really looking at you furthering your knowledge in a subject that you're passionate about. Another line to looking at what you want to do in terms of your career and giving you that leverage and that step up to take the next step in your career and being able to specialise and hone your expertise.

It is said that those who are masters can also earn a potential increase to your earnings and really giving you that space I think from the difference between undergraduate a masters level, where you have that independent learning, you know, you've got a foundation. But at the Masters you're taking it to the next level, honing your expertise and doing it from a really, I think, learner perspective.

We've obviously got the experts in the room, but this is about you pushing our boundaries testing your expertise as well.

So, in terms of funding, fees and funding, in the UK, a postgraduate master's loan can help you with the course. This is from a UK perspective. You can get up to £12,858 if your course starts on or after the 1st of August this year (2025).

And then whether you qualify for that will depend on your course, the course that you select, your age and your nationality or residency status, you can find out more. And there's a link just at the end of that, that page there at Gov.uk/funding-for-postgraduate-study. Around all of that. We do have a finance team within the university as well, if you did want to, to put in inquiries there. But generally for funding or everything that you need will be on the government website.

For international students, all international fee-paying students are required to pay a deposit. And that deposit is 8000 British pounds. For the international foundation year, the fees are 14,900 and undergraduate, etc. So we do have a vice chancellors scholarship, which is £2,000. And students who pay their full tuition fee before the course starts will be eligible for £1,000 discount. So it is quite useful to get in on time.

And we do have a 25% discount for those graduating in the last two years and 10% over two years.

Okay, all of the fees and funding details are all on our website as well, should you need them. I've just spotted a QR code as well in the corner if you need that.

What I do want to do and appreciate, I'm talking now, probably about 15 minutes at you is just take you through our programmes, our courses, giving you a little overview or a snapshot of each of the master's courses that we have within the business school.

If you have any questions at any stage, as Emily said, please do pop it in the chat box. I I'll happily answer any other questions afterwards. If I don't get to all of them today, I'm sure we can, post you to the right direction to get those answers as well afterwards, but I will do my best as we go through this and leave enough time at the end for you to ask those questions.

Okay. Our MSC Accounting and Finance, you know, really innovative programme which students in terms of our PTES, we affectionately call PTES, which is the postgraduate taught experience survey, has recorded a 100% overall satisfaction in the last PTES survey. And really, this is about honing your skills for anybody who has previously studied an accounting and or finance degree programme, this is about improving your employability skills in terms of critical thinking, communication, team work leadership and management.

It is about taking your studies to the next level in accounting and finance because you should have done the the core undergraduate ANF programme. And this is adding to that so that that you're getting more of a strategic perspective around accounting and finance.

So it very much adds to your CV. And by completing the course, you can apply for exemptions for the ICAEW and CPA Australia. So giving you that international development dimension as well with the CPA Australia professional qualification. You can, through the programme take a short to medium term finance internship. And you would do that in and around your study.

So the while you're studying the content, you're obviously building that relevant industry work experience as well. Within the university, we as I mentioned, obviously we have the careers and employment service.

But to complement that, we also have a student employment agency where a lot of our students across the programmes by the way, this isn't just specific to accounting and finance. You can apply for different short to medium internship opportunities that crop up in your area that really give you that extra exposure to industry, and you develop and hone your employability skills.

The MSC international business gives a really nice breadth of understanding across the various business subjects. So it’s a focus on applied analysis in economics, strategy, law, finance, marketing and human resource management. All from a very international or global perspective. You do engage obviously with an international expert within that programme, where you do a live brief.

For example, last year the students did a live brief with a global organisation in their international economics module exploring a particular challenge. And their assessment was presenting solutions to the challenge that that organisation had posed. And again, this is about boosting your employability skills.

And students across our programmes can opt to do an additional, I don't want to say accreditation, but certification around a futures award. And that is showcasing your extra-curricular activities that you've built up over time to give you that extra credit, as it were, to showcase how you've been developing those employability skills throughout the programme.

Again, on this programme, in the last PTES survey, our student satisfaction levels were at 100%, which just really shows how much and how much support you get from the academics on our programmes. They're there, they're guiding you. Any challenges that you have, you just have to speak with your academic.

Each student across the portfolio of programmes gets a personal academic tutor there with you throughout the year that you're studying. If you're studying full time with us to support you and guide you in terms of your studies, your employability, how you're developing those employability skills, etc..

Apart from the international business programme, we do have international business and finance, we have an international business and marketing and an international business and HCM programme. So it does all of the core international business programmes, but obviously from a finance perspective, you also focus on financial markets from a global context.

Here again, you very much get access to global experts, but also looking at our finance lab and really developing your skills from a finance perspective.

From our finance lab. You know, we've got a state of the art finance lab going into the new building. We will have Bloomberg software within there, as well as the London Stock Exchange Group, software which provides data streams, which has got the massive bank of Historic Finance and economic data, but also through Altech and Bloomberg.

You're accessing at the point live data from the stock market, so you can develop your skills in using the industry standard software, which is exceptionally important and a real added benefit to you when you do go to look for that work once graduated, post-graduation.

From an MSC in Social Business and HCM perspective, this is accredited by the CIPD Chartered Institute of Professional Development.

And again,  running theme 100% satisfaction for students studying on that programme. This really deepens your understanding around business and human resource management in an international context. And that accreditation is really important because that really fully prepares you to meet the CPD requirements for a HR profession.

So anybody that wants to work in a human resource perspective, excuse me. This programme is very relevant for that, not only giving you the CIPD accreditation, but also giving you that understanding of how a global business operates and all of the key facets that come in from that, whether that be strategy, law, and so on.

But really bringing that, and aligning it from a human resource management perspective.

Then from a marketing perspective, obviously, you know, as I said, you look at that core international business focus, but this one really brings out the marketing and deepens your understanding of the global consumer. So looking at obviously and understanding cultural diversity and how that can impact marketing throughout the you know, for any single organisations, small, medium, large throughout the globe.

And really this programme gives you that wider understanding. You working within a global corporation in a marketing department, for example, how can you ensure that you're operating at the level that resonates on a on a global market? We have an MSC global supply chain and operation management programme, really specialising in areas such as global operations, purchasing and supply, warehousing and transport and logistics.

This is an accredited programme by CILT, the Chartered Institute for Logistics and Transports and really brings in that high level strategic awareness of the entire supply chain. And I think we all know from the pandemic, and Covid times, the supply chain and the importance of the supply chain is so important in our global economy.

We're very blessed with being based in the Midlands as the Derby Business School, to have very strong connections with leading global, supply chain and logistics operators, and that is very much embedded within the curriculum for this particular programme both for our students to go on day trips to view those and corporations, but also for those businesses to come in and talk and give live briefs to our students.

In particular. I think of interest for this programme is each spring we run a supply chain week, a supply chain and logistics week with whole week of activities where we're engaged with leading businesses from that particular sector. Our students get exposed to all of that, as well as our leading researchers in the area. So this is a really vibrant, I think, contemporary programme that is connected because of the really place that we're located in terms of Derby, the Midlands region, being so well connected for those, regional leaders and global leaders of this particular sector.

The MSC Marketing Management is accredited by the Chartered Institute of Marketing.

This is where you get the opportunity to explore consumer decision making, marketing communications, branding, customer satisfaction, etc.

I think from a marketing perspective and especially, we get lots of businesses that reach out to us with real projects. So our students, from a marketing perspective, get some fantastic opportunities to work on live briefs as part of their programme.

I mentioned the student employment agency earlier. A lot of the opportunities that come through there or for marketing internships. So, for students in this programme and across our business school portfolio, you get that opportunity to really deepen your professional insights, to improve your career prospects so that your graduating hopefully with a good, honours, sorry distinction in your postgraduate programme, but also you've built up some relevant industry experience while you study with us.

And that is something we absolutely can support you with while you study with us at Derby,

One of our newer programs, it's an MSC in Digital Marketing. Very exciting. It's only just recently started and again, this really focuses you've got your core marketing management modules.

But this brings those and, you know, deepens your understanding around social media engagement, viral marketing, multi-channel campaigns, etc.

I think around all of that it’s around digital analytics and how you can make informed decisions around those different campaigns to be working with various organisations. Work-based projects are absolutely embedded throughout the programme.

And again, you have that opportunity of working with or applying for internships and working with local organisations to really enhance your employability skills.

We have an MBA. And the MBA, you know, really gives you that breadth of understanding, depth and breadth of across the business subject areas.

We take a collaborative approach to work through the programme and really gives very good networking opportunities for you to work with students from around the world. So we've got a real diverse student base in this particular programme.

You're working with businesses from public, private and the third sector. So for the voluntary sector, really allowing you, which is what the MBA is about to build those industry and professional networks.

All of the students on this programme, you have an opportunity to work on a social impact project for six months. You can either work with or for the organisation offering your skills, knowledge, experience and time to really making a positive impact on the organisation themselves and societal needs.

So that social impact is really important and something actually, you know, from a university business school perspective, that really resonates with us. Because when you're studying a business subject across the spectrum of all the focus on talking about what we want to develop as leaders of the future, and not only just leaders of the future, but responsible leaders, so that you understand studying your very or your specific chosen business subjects that you graduate from that subject area, having a greater awareness of how you can impact society as a whole.

And what do you do in the MBA programme is really have the opportunity to work on a project for over six months that can have that societal impact or addressing, you know, really organisational and societal needs.

The MSC management, and this is available as well to non-business students, non-business background students.

If you've done a programme that is business undergraduate or is not a business undergrad such as engineering, arts, whatever it may be. This program is designed to help those with no business background, so it can give you, it's a management  and leadership masters where you gain a broad range of those management skills from strategic thinking, finance, risk management and again, exploring supply chains.

And at the end of this programme, instead of doing a dissertation, you do what they call like a corporate project. You do in-depth research for a business, which is like a consultancy project, I guess is what you do, where you're working with an organisation, working on a challenge that they propose to you, and recommending some improvements or solutions for that particular organisation.

And again, some very high satisfaction rates for this particular programme in the last PTES that was done.

Coming almost the end of the all of our programmes that I'm showcasing now.

But before I do that, this is our MSC Human Resource Management. This is accredited by the CIPD and we are a CIPD approved centre.

And what this does, is it really gives you career development skills and proves your professional status. That can really pave the way for associate membership of the CIPD. It is a stepping stone to getting chartered membership.

So we work with my colleagues, the programme leader, the academic team of this programme work very closely with the CIPD to make sure that the content that you're learning is relevant, up to date and contemporary and very much aligned with CIPD guidance.

You gain specialist knowledge, confidence and professional standing and all that you need to apply for leadership and management roles in human resource management, in particular.

Our MSc Sustainable and Ethical Business Management. I spoke earlier about our role as a business school in developing leaders and responsible leaders of the future. And this MSc programme in particular, takes that probably to the next level and really look at becoming, you know, for our students to become responsible business practitioners in a really ever changing world.

And you learn how to find responsible solutions that can really help businesses transition into, you know, to help the global economy transition into this sustainable economy.

You've got a lot of employer-led briefs within this simulation activities and industry case studies, and really gives you that transformational view of how we do business. And actually how we can take a responsible stance in all of the decision based, sorry, the business decisions that we actually make. And that's absolutely aligned very strongly with us as a business school

in terms of the research that we undertake, our curriculum that we have, that runs throughout the business school and this programme epitomises that in terms of us recognising that in an ever changing world, the decisions that we make are absolutely critical.

And from a response builder perspective, this programme really epitomises all of that.

We have a newly validated MSC International Hospitality and Tourism Management programme, and our tourism management discipline is actually ranked 33rd in the world in the QS rankings, and we're fourth in the UK for hospitality and leisure management, according to those key workers. Sorry, world ranking. University ranking table, which is absolutely phenomenal.

This programme, it's been recently revalidated. So it's really looking at contemporary themes around responsible tourism, sustainable hospitality solutions and building better business. And I think studying a subject such as this, and if you haven't been to Derby before, and if you have been in Derby and or the wider county of Derbyshire, you will really you recognise that we're in a in a beautiful city and county that is rich with heritage rich with hospitality and tourism.

So you get within touching distance of real-life examples which are embedded within this curriculum. You do have the option of a work placement on this programme, which you can do within the UK or abroad, which really allows you to put theory into practice.

And throughout the programme you gain necessary skills and education to lead the next generation of hospitality and tourism businesses.

The newest programme we've brought to our portfolio is the MSc Business Analytics, and the MSc Business Analytics will take its first intake of students this September. And this programme was absolutely co-developed with industry and understanding industry needs. Every single industry deals with data and they need graduates who can understand that data and transfer, you know, transform into language that everybody within the business can understand, but also that can be used to make those key business decisions.

So within this programme, you develop the skills needed to be digitally confident and a creative problem solver in this global world. You will hone your skills around digital technology with some really industry standard software that we're putting in place for this particular programme, but also developing those analytical skills, which are key, you know, they’re a real demand from industry at the moment for students with critical skills, analytical skills, and that can be applied across multiple sectors, from public to private to the voluntary sectors. Which really gives you a good standing when you are moving into the world of work and really enhances your career prospects.

So that's a very exciting programme, which is new, into our portfolio.

If you then want to take your studies to the next level. So you want to go beyond your level seven, which the postgraduate taught, you may be interested in a research programme and you have obviously or we have a derby our our traditional PhD programme. But as a business school we also have a Doctorate of Business administration.

And that is very much, doing a research degree, but from a very applied perspective. So this is where you will undertake research in an area that's relevant to your professional and academic development.

So if your interest is, you're working in an area, for example, of marketing a supply chain. You're picking a practical project, applying it in a real context to develop that into a research, dissertation. Adding the title of doctor to CV would really make that instant impression.

So it is taking it to the next level in terms of your studies. But it's something that we absolutely do. And very often well, this programme is a part time programme so students who study the DBA will do that on a part time basis. So they combine this with their working life.

We also have an MRes Leadership and management. And that is the stepping stone I suppose if you did want to do a PhD or a DBA but an MRes Leadership and Management programme in its own right is very much focussed around you as a as a, a professional, but as also as a researcher exploring areas within that particular subject area in more depth. We support you in the grounding and developing your knowledge in research methods for your future studies as well.

But within the programme, you will do one very large applied project. From that perspective, we do have pathways within our program in leadership and management, the MRes leadership and management, around project management, HRM, etc.. So there's about four areas within that that you can specialise in. So another new programme. And again the on-campus version of that starting this September.

So I am going to stop there and offer an opportunity for any questions. We're very happy for you to take questions. You can submit your questions into the Q&A box.

But also I'm going to now probably hand to Emily. What I will say, though, at the end is that no question is is a silly question. By the way, please ask any questions that you like. If there's anything you want me to give a little bit more depth, then I will absolutely do my best. If I don't, and if I don't know what the answer to that question I will come back to, and we we can respond back to you as well as at another stage.

But please do ask them, and I hope you got enough information there and I will do my best to answer anything else that you send through as well.

Thank you for that excellent presentation. So we're now going to run through the questions that have been posted. And as Nicola mentioned, if anyone has any more questions as we're talking, please feel free to continue to put these into the Q&A. And if we don't have time to go through them all, we'll signpost you to the information on our website or let you know how to get in touch with us afterwards.

So, our first question is from a student, that has received an offer on our MRES programme. So, congratulations on your offer. And they have asked, do we have any funding support for research programmes or scholarships for international students?

Yeah, it would be great for the international colleagues to respond with the direct feedback on that. But, I mean, we do have, as I mentioned earlier, some various scholarships.

If I went back through the PowerPoint, which I presume we will circulate as well afterwards. You be able to get access to that, but there is some funding available. And if you go to the website, all of that is available in terms of our fees and any funding, scholarships, etc. are all located there for you. So I hope that answers apologies.

Amazing. Thank you Nicola. So our next question is can I fit studying around having a job. Are there flexible study options.

So you can I mean when you study with us, if you are studying a full-time programme, is it is expected that you are a full time student. But we do try and keep your timetable compact.

So maybe over 2 to 3 days that you have your lectures, seminars and workshops so that you can have a part time job while you study with us. So we do try and work on that and be as accommodating when you possibly can for students while they study with us.

If the question is can you work full time, that is going to be a challenge when you are a full time student, unless you're going to do a programme part time, and that is absolutely something that we offer as well, that if you are a full time working, you could study some of the programmes on a part time basis. And that's where you would work your study pattern with your programme leader.

But for a full-time student, we try and keep the timetable as compact as possible so that you can, as I mentioned earlier, the internship opportunities that we have on offer through the university with local businesses, etc. you can take those opportunities while you study with us. We absolutely promote that type of activity.

Amazing. Thank you Nicola. So our next question is if I don't meet the entry requirements on the web page, is it still worth me applying?

I think it would be because very often instead of, entry requirements say at a degree level,

it may be that you have industry relevant experience as well. So I think it would be worth having that conversation either with our admissions team, if you could reach out when submitting your application and generally what we would come back with if you did meet there were quite serious maybe additional information that you can supply. So I think particularly from a business perspective, if you, for example, you know, you're interested in marketing or even from an accounting perspective as well, for example, that you have worked in a particular sector or from accounting, if you've done some of the professional papers, that would really help in terms of you get a gaining entry into that particular programme.

So I think it is worth reaching out, get it in the application in and startint that conversation.

Thank you Nicola. So our next question is related to the MRes Leadership and Management.

And a student is asking if they're constrained to specific research topics. Or could they choose their own research topic such as AI driven leadership?

Yeah we encourage you actually to to pick your subjects. I delivered the third module and the first cohort that took the MRes leadership ajd management, which is really about exploring your proposal and and what I've encouraged is I gave sample ideas but encouraged all of the students to come up with their own topic.

And I think the reason we do that is because we want you to find a subject that you're passionate about, because when you're passionate about it, you really enjoy researching that topic. And also, it may be that it's a subject that if you're working, so some of our students are working, they have part time, full time jobs that is relevant to your organisation, because we want your research to have that wider impact so that you could take that back. The learnings that you have, the practical learnings that you have and and embedded within the organisation.

So you see some tangible outcomes as well from your research. So yeah, very happy for our students to work with their supervisor to frame the topic that they're going to work them.

Amazing. Thank you Nicola. So our final question of the day is can I still apply for September?

Yes, absolutely. Please do get your applications in. We're very excited to be moving into the new business school in September.

We've got a fabulous staff base across the university, and I'm probably particularly biased, but I think probably business school staff are outstanding in every aspect. But you see, from the, you know, from the PTES, the postgraduate teaching survey results, our students are very happy when they come and study with us. As you have seen from the uni compare results, the students rank us really highly across the institution and the business school is included in that. We've got a really good variety of business subjects.

As you've seen the programmes that I've showed you today, that you really can hone your skills on. So if there's anything there that really interests you, absolutely get your application in and our admissions team will get back to you.

And we look forward to welcoming you to Derby in September.

So thank you very much, everyone for joining us this evening. And we hope we answered all your questions about the different degrees we offer. If you would like to discover more about postgraduate study, we'd love to welcome you to our postgraduate open event which takes place on Wednesday the 9th of July. You can join us either virtually or in person, and you can see a QR code on the screen there to book your place. But you'll be able to have a one on one discussion with some of our teaching team of the programmes Nicola's spoken about today.

And so thank you very much, everyone for joining us. Thank you.

Thanks everyone. Look forward to seeing you in Derby.
