What to expect at your Open Day video transcript

Hey, I'm Dani, and today we're at the University of Derby's Open Day. Choosing a uni is a big deal for anyone, and there's no better way to decide than by seeing it for yourself.

So, I'll be talking to students, staff, and even some future Derby students to give you a preview of what life at Derby could be like. Let's go check it out.

So what have you heard about Derby that made you want to visit today? -I'm looking at doing Business Management but playing the basketball here. So yeah, it's the basketball for me. -I'm looking at a Football Journalism course, and yeah, it looks very good. It's good facilities, great people. Yeah, it just seemed good all around.

So what is one piece of advice that you would give students starting their university journey? -So the most important advice I always say is please study something that you love. So, I think we often get students coming thinking that a certain subject would lead to a certain job, but actually they then don't enjoy their time at university because they're not passionate about it. So yes, something that they love, they need to study.

-Make sure you try and soak it all in because I think when you first come, it does look a little bit intimidating. But when you break it down and you have your conversations with the different experts, whether that's in a specific subject, or anyone who's in the pink hoodies who know about the University, make sure that you ask as many questions as you can do.

So if you could go back to your first Open Day and give yourself advice, what would it be? -See more of the facilities, ask more questions: no question’s a stupid question. Have more confidence, basically. -Don't be nervous. It's really overwhelming and scary. But honestly, it's not, it's never as big as it looks. -I think I was really nervous when I first came in. I feel like if I told myself to prepare those questions and I'd come in with them, I think I probably would have had some more questions answered.

-And what do you think the most exciting thing is for new students to experience today? -So they get to explore the University, look at the different subjects and really get to grips with kind of the size of it, and the level of work that they'll be doing if they do come to university as well.

-What I really hope is that they get a real sense of the breadth of the courses that we do, but more importantly, that the community that we are, and that they would be able to feel confident and actually be able to work and learn here really well. -The Open Day just gives everyone the chance to look at our facilities, meet the teaching team that are going to be supporting them throughout their three years, and really understand what nursing is all about, to make sure it's the right career choice for them.

-Today when we're trying lots of hands-on activities, it's really exciting for the students to see what we do and the kind of things we do with the children in the classroom, to kind of bring it to life a little bit more.

-Is there anything that you've learned today that you didn't know before you came? -Just about the courses for International Business and Business Management. Just the differences in them, I talked to the lecturers. And they were nice about that, so yeah. -There's a lot: there's a Students’ Union. There's stuff you wouldn't expect. It was just a great yeah, university, and I might this might be my first choice, actually, so. -I just randomly went to a Derby Open Day because I saw an advert on Instagram and I ended up just falling in love with the University. And if I hadn't gone, I wouldn't have known that this was the place for me.

-You learn much more about the University than your course; you learn about what's available to you, you learn about the look and feel. And I always think it's really important that those two things - study something you love - and be comfortable in the environment - are the two critical things, and you can't do that and choose if you haven’t been to an Open Day.

Have you ever heard that phrase ‘you just had to be there?’ Getting to see the campus and meeting everyone here really gives you that sense whether this is going to be the right place for you. So if you can, come to Derby and experience it for yourself.
