MSc Envrionmental Health
“Studying online allowed me to work full time as a food safety officer while undertaking the qualification. I’ve now passed my professional exams and am about to start working as an environmental health officer.”
I thoroughly enjoyed my experience
I found the course very interesting and enjoyed the whole experience of studying the MSc Environmental Health. I chose to attend the University for one taught module – it was useful to have that option.
Practical and relevant modules
All of the modules were interesting, but in particular, the ones that had practical application to work – the health and safety module for instance, and the negotiated module that Scottish students need to complete to satisfy the REHIS (Royal Environmental Health Institute of Scotland) requirements. This module covered pollution control (noise pollution, air quality and contaminated land).
The Practical Food Inspection module was also very good, especially since we got the opportunity to examine and taste exotic fruits and vegetables!
I’ve gained a deeper understanding
I've developed various skills, but in particular, I've become more aware of the stressors that act on the sphere of environmental health and the intervention strategies and legislation that can be used to deal with these stressors. I've gained a deeper appreciation of how the subject areas interrelate and how the environment has the potential to affect public health.
Online study was perfect for me
Studying online was great, as it allowed me to work full time as a food safety officer with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar (Western Isles Council) while undertaking the qualification. The systems were easy to navigate and some tutorials and presentations were done by video conferencing which really helped bring them to life.
Lecturers that really know their subject
The lecturers were very supportive and understanding. Some of the lecturers are environmental health officers and therefore have got lots of practical experience and understanding of the work involved.
I’m qualified and about to become an EHO
I sat my REHIS professional exams and obtained my Diploma in Environmental Heath, which I need to practice as an environmental health officer (EHO). I’m now about to start working as an EHO with Comhairle nan Eilean Siar!
