The Postgraduate Certificate in Career Guidance provides a flexible, fully online pathway into the career guidance profession, designed for practitioners already working in the sector as well as those seeking to move into career guidance for the first time.
Delivered by the internationally recognised International Centre for Guidance Studies (iCeGS) at the University of Derby, this programme develops the core skills, professional identity and theoretical understanding required for effective career guidance practice across education, community and workplace settings.
Studying three 20-credit level 7 modules over one year, you will gain a comprehensive grounding in career development theory, personal guidance practice, and reflective professional identity. The course will allow students to apply for Registered Career Development Practitioner (RCDP) status with the Career Development Institute (CDI).

The certificate comprises three 20-credit modules at level 7:
- Career Development Theory (theoretical foundations)
- Personal Career Guidance Practice (institutional application)
- The Identity of the Career Guidance Practitioner (ethical and reflective practice)
These modules align with the National Occupational Standards for Career Development and together provide the 60 postgraduate credits required for Career Development Institute (CDI) Registered status.

Study skills
Many of our students are mature learners and have not studied academically for many years. To help you to become an effective student, able to study at postgraduate level, there are a number of advanced study skill resources available to you covering areas such as research skills, critical evaluation in academic context, literature search, referencing, plagiarism and so on.
Pace of study
The course is completed over one academic year. We recommend around 20 hours of study per week to complete one 20-credit module over a 10-week trimester for the standard study plan.
Assessment
Assessment on this course is designed to support professional reflection, critical thinking and practical application.
The course is assessed entirely through coursework, with no exams, and tasks are designed to be both practical and reflective, enabling you to apply theory directly to your own professional or organisational context.
You will complete a mix of formative activities, such as discussions and tutorials, alongside summative assignments, with regular feedback and guidance from your tutors throughout the course to support your development as a reflective practitioner and demonstrate achievement of the learning outcomes.

On successful completion, you will be awarded a Postgraduate Certificate in Career Guidance (60 credits at Level 7).
This qualification supports progression into a wide range of roles, including:

- you should normally hold a first degree, however equivalent experience and achievement may be considered for applicants with less formal qualifications. Evidence of equivalence of knowledge, understanding and skills appropriate to a first degree are required

English language qualifications
If English is not your first language, or you have not successfully completed your highest level of qualification in English, you will need an English language qualification equivalent to a minimum IELTS (International English Language Testing System) average score of 6.5 or equivalent.
If you enrol with this minimum score, you will be encouraged to engage with additional study to develop your knowledge and application of academic English.
