Cancellation policy for online students

We hope that you will find all of the support you need from us to successfully complete your programme. However, we do recognise that situations and circumstances change and that external factors can influence your decision to start or continue with your studies. If you decide that you no longer wish to study with us, or you need to take a break then please read the information below.

Withdrawing from programme

If you wish to request a withdrawal, please follow the online withdrawal process which can be found by searching ‘Withdrawal’ in the UDo Student Portal. Prior to completing this process, please ensure you refer to the appropriate cancellation charges information and Part D - Enrolment and Registration within our Academic Regulation. If you have set up an automatic payment, you will need to contact the finance team by email at salesledger@derby.ac.uk in order to cancel your payments.

Please note: if you do not engage with the study materials the cancellation policy still applies.

Authorised Break in Study

Interrupting your studies (also called taking an authorised break from study) may become necessary if circumstances make it impossible for you to continue studying for a short period of time but you do not wish to permanently withdraw from your course.

Students can commence a break no later than one calendar month before the end of teaching on their current modules. Thereafter the Request for Additional Consideration process may apply.

You can take a break for up to one academic year. Requests for extended breaks beyond one year can only be approved by a review process initiated by your Academic/Programme Leader.

Please note: taking an authorised break in study may incur cancellation charges as outlined above.

If you wish to request a break, please follow the online Authorised Break in Studies process which can be found by searching 'Authorised break in studies' in the UDo Student Portal.

Reducing rate of study

If you reduce your rate of study from accelerated (two modules per trimester) to standard (one module per trimester), the above cancellation charges still apply.

If your tuition fees are paid by a professional body or your employer, it is important that you discuss your intentions with them. They may have policies regarding repayment of fees in this situation. If you have chosen to defer your tuition fee payment by taking out a student loan and you withdraw between certain dates, you may not meet the Student Loans Company criteria and therefore would be liable to pay a percentage of your fees for the year upfront. Please contact Student Finance England for further advice.
