    Research Interests

William’s research focusses on providing robust theoretical and empirical foundations to support the effective integration of contemplative practices in applied settings. Examples of empirical projects that he is currently leading include (i) investigating the utility of second-generation mindfulness-based interventions for improving wellbeing and human functioning, (ii) formulating and empirically evaluating an approach to mindfulness that acknowledges its spiritual properties and the need for mindfulness instructors to be embedded in the practice of meditation, (iii) conceiving and providing empirical support for a new psychological theory (called Ontological Addiction Theory) that posits ‘addiction to self’ as a third category of addiction in addition to chemical and behavioural addiction, (iv) advancing scientific understanding into emptiness including its role for improving biological, neurological, and psycho-spiritual wellbeing, and (v) evaluating the applications of an eight-week behavioural intervention called Meditation Awareness Training (MAT) in clinical, educational, and occupational settings. William employs a variety of research methods ranging from randomised controlled trials and long-term prospective studies to clinical case studies. In addition to quantitative research designs, most of his intervention evaluation studies feature a strong qualitative component.
